The greasey fingers build :)

Focused on mounting the seat and rear fender atm. My seat is designed for an sr400 and its got two clips underneath which im guessing slip under the tank on the sr400, but they juuust don't make it to the tank on the xs.

So I made this bracket, will need to get it welded on. It seems to line up really nice with the seat clips so far

I bolted on this strut under the seat, my idea is to have another strut welded on the frame hoop directly underneath, then simply bolt it on with two bolts. Im looking for simple solutions and I think it should all work ok?

Been working on the rear fender struts today and its actually quite a tricky job. Gotta get the angles just right. Im using a piece of cut off fender to get the angles right before I mount the actual fender.

My plan of attack is to get one strut done so the fender is sitting exactly or as close to centred over the wheel and the right height. Then work on the strut on the other side so it lines up as close to perfect as possible so it just slots into place without pulling or pushing the fender once bolted up tight. Then make a mount coming up from under the swing arm and fix the bottom of the fender to that.

My thinking is that once the two rear struts are holding it in place and its sitting exactly where I want it, then I can mark the drill points for the bottom fender mount and finish it off.

If anyone has some input on this that would be cool, maybe someone has done this before and can shed some light on the best way to approach this job? I guess more you hard tail guys would have done this sort of thing before.

Its a tricky job  not gonna let it beat me though...I hope!

Oh yeah, does anyone know how much clearance would be needed from the top of the fender to under the seat to allow for suspension travel, around 10cm or so? Don't want the fender hitting anything under there and getting dented when I go over a big bump!!!

Mounting a fender to a moving swing arm is not a good idea. There will always be a good chance of a hitting a big bump. If the bike is a hard tail this would not be an issue. If you can make it work then go for it:thumbsup:

Cheers Requiem and thanks for the ideas!

Good point chris, I like the idea of doing it this way but can rethink it. First and foremost I want this bike to be comfortable and rideable, so function comes first then form. If it wont work then I wont go with it.

If I know what the maximum travel of the suspension is, I can assess the risk of hitting the bottom of the frame.

Look at the shocks you have and how far they will move before they bottom out. I would say at least 4".

I don't know you can either get a fat friend to bounce on it or put them in a press to see how far they travel under load.

Been looking into it and hagon can make me a custom set for my weight and bottom out specs. They said just take off existing shocks and pull the swing arm up until the wheel (with fender attached) reaches where it will touch under the seat or frame and measure the distance from the shock mounts eye to eye. Then they can make a set to that bottom out spec, what do you think?

I wouldn't stop the direction that you are headed with the mounted fender. If you are running it close to the tire, then interference really shouldn't be an issue.

If in the end you need more clearance, buy a set of longer shocks. I'm running 14.7" long Fox Podium R's on my XS. Excessively long for what you would need, but there are many lengths you can get from many companies! If you are willing to spend the money on custom shocks, do that!

Good call spindat I totally agree. I really don't like the look when its comes up on a weird angle like this bike (this bikes cool I just don't like the fender angle):

Made up some struts for the rear fender, they all line up nice so far  (I gave one a quick polish)

Tapped a three M6 threads into the underside of the swingarm and made a strut to secure the bottom of the fender. I plan on using extra strong thread lock on the three M6 bolts on final assembly.

And heres a quick mock up to get a general idea of how it will all look at the back. (Im going to have a bracket welded to the rear hoop to mount the tail light)
