82 heritage, My third xs400

I wondered what you use to make your seats look so shiny,I think the bike looks realy good, what are your plans are you going to paint it or leave the original color?

Nice. The 650s are excellent machines. But the 400 is a lot lighter, and makes probably close to the same hp id imagine. The 650 is not counter balanced in anyway, and being a 360* crank...it lets you know so. But being in good tune with well balanced carbs really helps. Also, too short of a 5th gear...yamahas first. 4 stroke. I think they figured it needed to be in high rpms like a 2 smoke. Even a reduction of 400rpm in 5 would be nice. Yes, the 5th gear overdrive is made....it was out of stock when i built my last engine.

How did I miss this thread for 6 days? Very nice acquisition - will enjoy following your winter reno.

Just curious about the Walmart set of brake lights. Can we assume this is a set of 2 LED bulbs which fit in the stock brake light housing and not an entire new unit, and that the LEDs are dual "filament" in terms of their functioning?

Well I have put the first 100 miles on it and it is running better and better:) It is the most miles it had had in 4 years. I defiantly need a new chain as the one that is on there now has a lot of junk on it and wont move as well as it should. I think I will be done riding this one till spring. :(

The white ones.
I was considering this and began reading about it.
I stumbled on this forum. Wow, and I thought motorcycle wrenchers could be a touch nerdy at times.
It probably should be a new thread if it sparks this kind of debate, however, for the time being, :hijack: :

An interesting discussion which could certainly be used by someone wanting to justify NOT "upgrading". Some motorcycle guys weigh in later on too.

Keep in mind that the CPF thread is 4+ years old. In the world of LED's that would be 8 generations out of date, more or less. Some of the arguments put forth are still valid, but many are not. The LED's of today are more efficient and have higher output than 2 years ago, never mind 4. White LED's now output a broader spectrum of light and will work when filtered. Of course, if you can find LED bulbs in the correct spectrum for your needs, then use them. They will be brighter than a white LED through a filter (coloured lens).

One should also be aware that there is a significant difference between a $5 LED bulb, and a $50 LED bulb. I have not had good luck with the cheap bulbs. At this time, I'm at a 95% failure rate within a year. Additionally, the cheap bulbs are nowhere close to their claimed intensity.

The led 1157 brake bulb that I have in my 80 has been there for over two years and still works fine. I did pay a bit over $20 for it. Time will tell on the walmart ones:laugh:

Ok, a $20US bulb is probably similar to a $40CDN bulb. What kind of mileage has the bulb seen? In 2+ years I've rode 23k km (14k miles) in all weather conditions, from freezing to 35C (95F), sunshine or rain/snow, on all manner of roads including gravel, and some trails. The cheap LED's have either fallen apart, have burned out, or both.

Time will tell how well the expensive LED bulbs survive, but so far they have lasted. Some even have a lifetime warranty, for what ever that may be worth...

The one on my 80 has only 4k miles on it. I have 4 other bikes I also ride:laugh:) so it has not seen a lot of time. Only time will tell how they will last:shrug:

This year it will be 5:laugh: I have a walk in basment:D Just push them in and done.

Put it in the basement after it's last ride for the season. Started the break down. I also decided to go with the stock seat from my 80. It's a lot more comfortable.

Took a little more off of it. My 6 year old son is helping:) I felt it is a good time to start showing him how all these xs400's work as they will be his some day.

Finished getting the rear all apart. The swing arm bushings and sleeve are good but I will replace the seals, witch I already had:laugh:, with new ones. I think I know what I going to do with it for this winter. No new paint, other than the center stand witch is rusty, clean all the crud and oil off the bike and leave all the scratches and nicks just they way they are. Kind of a survivor/sympathy restore kind of thing.

Did a little more with the 82. Carbs are off and new boots will be going on. Installed a 17 tooth front sprocket. The old one was a bitch to get off because it seems that some fool must have used a impact gun on the nut:doh::banghead: Had to use a 2 foot breaking bar to get it off.
