Supercharging

Drewpy, I have a spare motor sitting here I'd sell for much much less than that. If you want to price out shipping from Canada (my postal code is K0K 2Y0) we could work something out?

See what your nice rebuilt motor is worth, and price up the shipping and cost of this offer from hutchinson, do the maths and see if you can come out on top :bike:

shippers won't even touch engines that heavy

i'd have to add 20% import duty and them 20% on to of that for VAT

Drewpy, did you figure out how you are going to rig up your oil cooler? I just acquired a few eBay pieces to play around with. From what I can tell, the generic Yamaha oil cooler adapter from the era will fit, but looks like the lines won't fit because of clearance on the motor mounts on the cases. The generic Yamaha spin on filter adapter should work as well, with minor modifications. What I'm going to try is using the spin on filter adapter, then use a modern oil cooler adapter with a spin on filter. The benefit of the modern adapter is that it uses a thermostat, is pretty thin, and has lines exiting out the top. I did buy the old school oil cooler adapter just to try out since it was cheap, but just looking at the motor I'm sure it won't work.

Edit- Just read your blog. You are already well aware of this ;)

Going back to the 180 vs 360 crank and plenum issue.
On another Victory Library page he does mention larger plenums for two cylinder 180 degree crank engines. Almost double the plenum size on the 180 vs the 360 cranks.

Might be easier to make the plenum larger than to rephase the crank and get custom cams. The AMR300 is already oversized for the application so filling a larger plenum won't be an issue.

Info was at: http://victorylibrary.com/supercharger/super-carb6.htm
But some pages on the site are missing.

Second-to-last table, "Plenum volume vs. engine type".

thanks I saw that too

bought some more goodies today

XJR1300 conrod, brand new and GPZ900 pistons

might get the pistons ceramic coated as they have a little bit of wear on them

Bernd from xs400.net sent me some photos of the pistons, but no specs

Forgot to post a picky of the 1 1/4" SU carb

seems the best for supercharging with less fuelling issues. Its just a fuel dumping device really

Just read the blog post on the pistons. Will you have them milled down by 1mm when you have the valve cutouts done?
A thicker head gasket could make up the difference but I'm not sure how it'd affect other factors.

I was also wondering. If you ever have the Aisin apart could you measure the rotor diameter, rotor length, and center distance between rotor shafts?
More detailed specs on the Aisin superchargers are pretty hard to find. For most applications the 300cc displacement is enough but I was hoping to do some comparisons between their rotor profile and other designs.

not going to disassemble the AMR's they are tricky to get back together and need a special tool to keep the rotors aligned on assembly.

going to follow what Bernd did and not space it out

Still collecting bits and getting suppliers sorted

Drewpy, I want this to succeed so bad :) I'm going to be jealous when it's done. Any idea when you plan on having it complete?

no, no date, Just had the bike MOT's and just put together the FZ so i'll start using that.

change of plan for the gpzpistons, i think they will create too much compression. I need to lower it to 8.5:1 if i'm going to run 6 psi or so otherwise i'll blow the engine up.
making a bid for gs500 cylinders and seen some pistons off aliexpress which will fit the 18mm wrist pin of the XJR rods. The flat top will keep the compression down

Have you thought about removing some of the squish area from the head? Might be better for a boosted application. Wouldn't need to take much off, just enlarge the chamber a little.

Well this getting quite technical, well beyond my current skill set lol. Very interesting to watch this unfold, should be an awesome upgrade when done. How much are you budgeting for this drewpy?

Fair enough. I've tracked down a few people who've documented tearing them apart and it doesn't look fun. If you ever do though... even that center-to-center shaft-shaft distance would be helpful. :)

That Aliexpress piston is intriguing. The shorter height from wrist pin to crown should get your compression ratio down as much as you need without modifying anything else. Good find.

BTW There's an Aliexpress sale coming up on the 29th. Using their smartphone app can give surprisingly better deals sometimes.

budget? what budget. :D
nah, I don't budget as that becomes boring and I'll probably never do it.

that why it takes a while as I buy what i think i want and do it in stages. Like Leepu ( the Bangladeshi guru) it's all in my head and things change as it develops.

why do you need the centre to centre of the rotor shafts?

I'm just hoping ther pistons I'm buying are up to the job and are good enough quality.
