1980G The Phoenix

I am at this stage at present. Motor work is all done. Tires ordered. Now I am trying my hand at a fiberglass seat pan. Actually it is take 2, after reading loads of forums I went with cotton as my cloth. Poor choice, tough to lay down and not curl plus it takes so many layers to get any strength to it. Updated the plug to simpler design and will try again. Basement is a poor choice too, resin stinks up the house for days!!!!She who will not be named was not happy!

Oh I love the smell of resin :laugh2: fiberglass resin that is reminds me of my boat fixing days.........oh and get the cloth that they recommend it works the best. Tap plastics if you have one close not sure if there all over or what? They were great for help and all the supplies for me. I may have to do a pan.........

Work has stopped for a bit. I am in NYC waiting for repair of a prior heart surgery. I have had a major visionary change for this bike and have loads of new parts on the way for when I am ready to continue. I still need to replace the rubber but I have loads of time now before that is needed. I have done a total seat reshape but I am not sure if I will use it or not.

I love wiring motorcycles, especially when someone else was there first and changed the wire colors. I have had to undo most of the loom to find the splices. At least when I finish a lot of the extra stuff will be tucked away.

Finally making some progress, wire taped to their locations, I have plastic sleeve surrounds that I will install along with all new connectors once they arrive. I am getting ready for spring, can't wait until I fire this up! Still haven't decided on a tank color yet....

Wiring is finished, until my new mini tach came in the afternoon mail! I am short a headlight relay and I am trying to locate one. I changed the headlight to a smaller LED unit and I am waiting on a new stop lamp. I need to go back through the adjustment and torque the engine since a long time has passed since I put it together and want to be sure I finished

all the details I have read that the mini tach is wired in at the coil wire but I am not sure what else we have here. Has anyone else used a chinese eBay mini tach? How did you wire it in. Cut the fenders today too...It's starting to look like a bike again.

I bought one of the eBay cafe racer style seats and received 2 so I decided to attempt to solve a fender mounting issue I have. Nothing seems to fit quite right without getting way too close to the wheel, to the point of contacting it with any sort of spring travel. Today I took a scrap from the front fender bobbing and integrated it into the seat itself. I peeled back the seat cover, scribed the outline of the fender's crosse section, and proceeded to cut the shape out of the foam and plastic seat pan. I then pulled the seat cover back tight and stapled it in place. Next, I took the fender scrap and mounted it directly to the seat pan itself. I can still remove the seat as my taillight is not mounted to the fender. I am pretty pleased with the outcome and the line of the rear fender is great. This is the second time I have utilized a fender scrap to make my rear fender.

Well, I believe I have completed the mockup. Now it's time to finish things up and get this puppy kicked over!

Did you give up on making your own seat? as I see you just bought one.
Spectra, I have not given up yet. The weather has not been quite right for me to proceed with the fiberglass. My work area is inthe basement and the resin fired up the whole house for days and " she" was not happy. Once the weather warms up I will finish it off along with the electronic tray I have made the plug for. These seats are really inexpensive and were the means to an end. It was even cheaper seeing as how I received 2 of them for my $34! Practically disposable.I will be posting a batch of parts that I bought and didn't use, headlights, controls, extra seat, plastic fenders. I have mocked this up 3 different ways now. This time it is for real ( with maybe the exception of an exhaust modification...)

Well, just like most everyone else I am having a difficult time finding front brake cables. I ordered a set from an ebay vendor and didn't pay attention to the fine print. It was a set of 10" over cables and a brake hose. If anyone can use these get back to me. Now I have to figure out if I am going to make my brake cable or try another bike's cable, like from the XT500. Anyone used anything I should know about? I actually have shorter bars now but I could likely deal with standard length.
