1980G The Phoenix

Well, I took the plunge. I always loved Bultaco red. First color coat down. Block sand and recoat coming in a couple days.

mufflers had holes rusted through them. I ordered new aftermarket mufflers and wrapped the header pipes, man is that a pain in the ass! Tank graphics to do yet after one more color coat and clear.

Looks good and those pipes are not that bad.......biggest thing is keep it tight. Only thing I hated about it was the mess............

I tried the first time with them dry, big mistake. I also wasn't wearing gloves. I had a band gig that night and my hands drove me crazy. Oh, and the times that I held against my body, fiberglass in your belly isn't good either. I will armor up with multiple protective layers for the second one!

Yes soaked mine in a five gallon bucket for a few.....also mine came with rubber gloves and all the videos I watched people wore gloves.

Good luck on the second one.

Looks good and what do those muffs sound like? Trying to figure out exhaust on mine as the factory stuff is rusted out.

I doubt that they will "muffle" at all, I really don't know if I even like them.
I have been designing a 2-1 exhaust, there is a friend who can help me with it. At one point was going to try up pies like a scrambler but I gave up.
I haven't tried starting yet, still have a bunch of nickle -dime type stuff....and that freaking kickstarter!!

Those type mufflers are just about the worst ones out there. Your almost better off with straight pipes. To get a good running bike either have stock ones or you will need to spend some money for a good quality after market set.

They remind me of a Minnie cherry bomb :)

What would you consider a good aftermarket one Chris?

I am debating a 2 into 1 header and get a Cone Engineering muffler maybe. Maybe stick with the factory pipes and do 2 but I don't have the good pipes on mine.

Mac makes ok systems. If you have the 77-79 xs400 slip on type head pipes you can get just about any type quality muffler that can fit it.

I knew they were going to be less than desirable but took a shot, they were cheap. My stock pipes were done, once i started cleaning there was so many rust holes that it wasn't worth it. I will probably try something else, including extending the pipe before the muffler.

I had those mufflers on my bike when I first got it running. I removed them a month or so later. They were slightly loud which wasnt too bad for me, its just I hated it on the highway and constant speeds..

I picked up a set of tapered mufflers and Ive had them all since last Summer. Honestly, the tapered mufflers are probably like 1 step above the muffler you have, but the tapered ones have a better baffle and theres a directional flap inside that gives some back pressure and pushes flow into the baffles.

The tricky part with all these Emgo mufflers is getting them to seal properly on the header. I used high temp copper silicone.

I was cleaning front brake plate and fell out. Never even noticed a crack under the crud! Catastrophic failure....I think?
