1980G The Phoenix

Line up the bottom spring loop and the locator and start your rotation. I used a screw driver to wind the spring and it seemed to make things easier. Don't try and kick it without the case being bolted on and don't lose those washers/ spacers.

Yeah that was my issue I didn't wind the spring I think........didn't know about that after watching a video on it. Well will open it up and do it right this time I guess......

I just want to get it running its pissing me off :banghead:

Also may need to readjust clutch, I do.

Will see once its going. But the kick starter is fixed that was an easy one. If I had known to wind it.........

Hopefully is runs this afternoon.......bike didn't like to start on the starter when I got it. One kick and would run......has me scratching my head ?

I think mine is wrong, seems like no or little compression to the kick stroke. I have none to compare with. Also, does yours kick thru without the clutch pulled in?

Also, bought 2 more. 77 and 78 both are supposed to run. Thinking bobber soft tail for one of them and maybe a stockish restore on the other. Got them CHEAP for the pair. Now I have to go pick them up...hello u-haul?

Oh I have compression on mine and clutch isn't hooked up right now so yes no clutch is needed.

My other one that runs feels pretty much the same.

Have a neighbor with a truck?

I like the 400s but want something a little bigger or just different. Have been looking at the RDs or a SR would be nice. But at this time all my funds are going to college..........just found out whats its going to cost

I have looked at going a little bigger myself but I couldn't resist this deal. I have a buyer lined up already on the orange bike and the profit will purchase these and give me an extra to go a little upscale , build-wise. I also want to test my newly found welding skills and drop the seat angle so I can do a solo seat. I am enjoying the trend towards smaller bikes and the ease of riding them around town.

Selling this one or ? What did you sell it for ? 400s around here are hit and miss some want way to much and others are giving them away.

I just want a little more power. A 650 would be nice but the prices are stupid for them and not paying 1K for a basket case.......I like the 1100 I have but its a tank and don't like that.

Here are a couple pictures of the Vintage Flat Tracker inspired 1980G I just completed

I apparently need to look at my starter motor. It kicks out and a rattling chain-like sound heard under the cover. Brushes?

The starter clutch. Just sounds kind of spinny when you let go of the starter button?

It starts to spin, may even crank for a moment but then it will disengage and then you hear the chain sound. Is the starter clutch replace/repairable?? Is it readily available?

It can be repaired or replaced.
There are some kits on ebay:

I'd have a look at it before ordering anything.
Stator cover off, remove the starter chain, remove the rotor, look at starter clutch on back side of the rotor.
Careful when you remove the rotor. It should all come out together but if anything is funky the springs could go flying.

There is a special tool to remove the rotor. The correct one to use is basically a big bolt that threads in, forcing the rotor off. Do not use any of the typical "claw" rotor removers.

Thanks I see that there is a special tool or bolt used on the clutch. Thanks also on the heads up with stuff coming apart as I am the king of sending little parts sailing. I am ordering some magnetic sheets to put under the bike when I am working on them as I ALWAYS drop something that skitters away. I saw these sheets and said..."Hmmmmmm".
