Hello friends! And a big thank you to the post view. Here's my dilemma, Buddy of mine has had a buggy sitting being his house for a while. Awesome little kart. Recently it has become my buggy. I found out it has a xs400 powering it. I know there are several variants of this motor. It has 12r stamped on it so I'm guessing it is a 82 xs400r? Please correct me if I'm wrong. It is DOHC. Starter no kick start. And that's about all I know.. I have rewired it and it now cranks, but is shooting oil from the push rod seal. I removed the covor and found a solid hole. No push rod.. I havnt been able to crack the case open yet I need an impact screw driver. But in the mean time I cant find the push rod for this thing ANYWHERE. I found a metal rod that fits the hole for it. But was unable to push anything by hand. They have been rpm shifting this thing.. SOOOOO.. I am new to motorcyle engines, but plenty of car engine skill and fab skills. Should I be able to push the inside and move the clutch by hand what's the chance the whole assembly has been ruined? And what should I do about a push rod? If somone could give me exact dimensions I could fabricate one. If I can buy one I will. Or is there more I'm missing here? I have a couple more questions about it but I would like to get this pushrod situated and a new seal in, so I am able to run this thing more then 3 seconds and do some more diagnosing. Is there another model pushrod compatible? I'm hunting just a solid rod correct? I'm at the point to if all else fails I'll be searching for another engine..Which hasn't been easy finding either. I appologise for this message being a little jumbled up. My mind works all over the place. But I deeply appreciate any help somone may be able to lend, location, information, or dimensions.

Looks like the rod is broken off. You would need to remove the clutch cover and clutch to get to it. Hope that nothing inside the clutch is broken.

I was under the impression it was a sort of free floating rod that goes there? Am I wrong? I thought somone took the cover off lost the rod and that was it? Here is a diagram. So is it attached? Or does a rod just slide in

The rod slides in from the exposed side. It should stick out a few inches from the case.

There should be a loose bearing ball at both ends of the pushrod too. The clutch side ball will roll out of the mainshaft freely, but the other ball should be jammed into the clutch release mechanism on the sidecover. Id try finding a used one. I bought a brand new one for my bike but Im not sure if yours will be different, I bet its the same diameter just a different length.

Here's what I'm looking at. Engine says 12r on it but the 1983 xs400jr clutch diagram shows nothing I'm seeing.. so what am I missing. What motor model year what do I have and what's missing I need a part number year model or somthing

The rod has a broken section off of it. The rods should look like this. All dohc clutches should be the same. 12R is a 82 maxim xs400.
