Hardtailed77's "Re-build Thread"

HI hardtail, just wamted to say l think your lifts very clever , havnt really got the space for one myself but if l had l would deffo make one, cant wait to see how your bike turns out, well back to cleaning my engine :bike:

Thanks man! I wish I had the coin for a nice " real" lift, but I'm kinda glad I didn't, or I wouldn't have built the one I have. It actually saved me a ton of money in the long run.

I'll try to find a lift that I seen online awhile back...it was a pretty neat design using only plywood. It just sort of interlocked together without the use of any screws, allowing it to be broken down for easy storage.

Ok. Yeah, i left it out in the rain, then drained it before I left. It's sitting in the garage with the cap off, so I guess I will be fine. I just wasn't quite sure what was actually in the tank, so I didn't want to go lighting myself into a ball of flames! haha Thanks Skillz

I had a friend weld an ancient Humber snipe petrol tank, and it must have been 20 years sonce it was last used!.

the thing blew on him., I'd chuck a match in there on a long stick just to be sure!

And video that please

I soaked my tank in an oxalic bath for a couple of days to get rid of rust, and then rinsed it with water and then acetone.
cut it open with a grinder after that without any problem. Not sure how it would have reacted to welding though.

I've heard of people filling the tank completly with water, since it's the gas that ignites they made sure it was empty by filling it up. ;)

good luck, and make sure to catch it on film! could become a viral. :)

Wow, I just signed up here, your bike was fucking rad in the beginning. I am pretty sure I want something of the likes.

Thanks bro, and welcome! It's a lot of work, but it's cheap to build the bike that way. It's taking a lot longer on the rebuild than I had planned, but I think the final outcome will impress! Stay tuned man!

Sorry peeps....I've been crazy busy the last couple of months. I haven't really touched the 400 much in that time, but I have been gathering a few build parts. I got a set of levers from Skillz (thanks again man!), an old vintage, glass lensed taillight, among other little things. I also finally found an old 3/4 helmet to paint matching the bike when I finish it. I'm hoping to pick up my new welder in the next few weeks so I can finish welding the new hardtail on. After that, it's pretty much a downhill battle for the rest of the build. I'm still in the market for a different headlight, but I may have found one on Ebay. I have also been drawing up plans to turn the bike into a jockey shift.

Not much of an update, but it's better than nothing I guess. haha

I take them to the carwash, soap, then home to rinse with water, then paint thinner, then alchohol. That usually leaves them pretty clean and fairly safe to cut or weld, after airing out overnight, lhaolpa

Yeah, I think I will probably hit them with clear, then buy all new bolts next winter.
Thanks for the tip.
I'm getting all allen key bolts for the ones that are not already replaced.Right now, they're all mixed up with the hex bolts rusty, the allen heads non-rusted.lhaolpa

I want to clean the engine so the paint will stick, but I'm sort of lost on how to go about doing that. I thought about temporarily bolting the exhaust and carbs on the keep water out, then throwing the whole thing in the bed of the truck, then taking it to the car wash with a can of two of engine degreaser.

Do you guys see any problem with that? I don't think water will get in the motor, but hell, I'm not sure! lol I plan to change the oil before running it again by the way...
If the metal is clean[no grease or oil] you can use white vinegar, just spray on with a spray bottle, and use a clean cloth, and paint. lhaolpa

HT, I dont know what style you are going for with your bike now but i was looking through my dads junk today and found the most killer Perlux fog lap with a slate/grill style front that looks SOOO cool, I may try to use one on my bike, they are redily available on ebay....just think it would be a bitchin lookin light for a hardtailed bike. (feel free to steal the Idea)
