would these fit?

I have never heard of any 650 exhaust parts being used on a 400. In fact, I hear very little of any 650 parts being used on a 400. With the price of those, even if they did fit, I would just get a used set off ebay for a lot less and polish them up.

for 85 dollars plus shipping I'll give you a set for the 400! Haha just kidding. I don't think they would, I'd imagine the 650 has a bigger exhaust port.

accoring to some other posts left by mitch, i believe it is a 1980 xs400

if you go to this site http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html
enter year / model , then look up your part, it will tel which other years models used the same part... for a 80 XS400G not much help  as the collar is only listed as part of the complete muffler/exhaust, left side obs. not available, right side @$416.56 :yikes: also used on 81/82 XS400 not 650's so I doubt the 650 clamp would fit

just tried to install a set I bought for a xs650 build on my xs400, they will bolt up fine but the collars are not long enough to hold stock yamaha pipes tightly into exhaust ports. You would need to fab a collar extension about 1/8" to 3/16" long to hold pipes tightly.

thanks guys.
i've been trying to find some stock ones with no luck yet but i'll keep looking.:banghead:

pretty sure you could adapt xs650 stock flanges to fit, there are lots of them around, I am sure I have several stock sets . XS650 pipes will slip into a 1980 xs400 exhaust port but the angle the port faces is different. xs400 is straight on and xs650 is outboard at a angle.

At the risk of resurrecting this from the dead, a set of xs650 pipes fell into my lap for free and I'd be interested in getting them on my 82 xs400. I see hints and whispers about it (like above) but haven't seen any details. Anyone does this successfully or should I move these 650s out the door and keep looking?

Edit: Found a local shop with a whole pile of 80s pipes. Quickly spotted some '82 XS400 Seca pipes, would those fit on the Maxim? (I haven't seen a parts diagram for the 82 J [Maxim] so not sure how else to confirm.

Different bike and different pipes. Look for sets made for your bike.

Thanks Chris.

Maybe a simple question, but am I dealing with stock headers and simply loud slip on cans (see photos)?

If so could I reasonably go with a different set of aftermarket cans to reduce the decibels?

Stock originals would be great (I've read lots of posts about the difficulty in getting good tune in anything but stock exhaust) but sounds like a rare item these days.
