Starting my project

so i worked on the bike for about 6 hours today. got both wheels on, new battery, new chain/sprockets, i have yet to add the front brakes, and all the control cables but that will be tomorrow. when thats taken care of i will troubleshoot the turn signal lights that are inop.

i finally got the front wheel lined up straight with that triple tree being perpendicular to the spine of the frame. however i am having an issue with the handlebars wanting to drift under turning movement (they will not stay straight parallel with the triple tree). do i just need to tighten up the clamps at the base of the handlebar clamps more?

i have some pictures from this morning before and after i started working on it. i even added some of my heritage to the fuel tank to make the bike my own :bike:

What I think you are saying is that when you move your handle bars they have play or movement. If this is the case than it would be your riser bushings. Sometimes just tightening them will do it or adding a washer to make them stiffer. If they are real bad you will need to replace them.

im still waitin on my paypal =(

The rings I have for you are for the headlight ears not the handle bar risers:confused:

OK, a bad riser bushing will cause a lot of bar problems.

yes well i got the triple tree and the forks lined up good but after pushing the bike around for a bit the bars start to move on me. i have the sneaking suspicion that even though i really tightened them down good, that the rubber mounts are dried out :banghead:

worked on the bike on sunday as well. sort-of fitted the throttle cable, not the best of fits as the old one was, very tight :(

after buying new turn signal bulbs and getting ready to fix the headlight and go ride, i find that my motion pro speedo cable was the wrong style, other end did not have the screw cap that the original had, dont want it popping out mid-ride.

turned on the electricals to see that the rear-brake lights are all funky, the turn signals work, even when not selected, and the brand new horn i installed works just as well as the old burnt out one, so i gotta trace down that wire issue.

it was just to the point where i bought parts for one set of problems only to find out the bike has developed a new set of entirely different problems, and at that point i just walked away for the day before i went postal. will have this weekend and monday to tackle some of those issues though.

Im right with you bro, i HATE electrical work. Especially when it's 30 yrs old and designed by people who obviously want me to go insane. But you can find some excellent wiring diagrams on the site, good luck with all the issues!

OK! so i still have much electrical work to do, much OEM parts to order (my motion pro speedo and throttle cable, did not fit...), and today was so beautiful out that i even took time off work to go work on the bike.

I changed the oil filter, the O-rings accompanying, drained and changed the oil, cleaned the oil filter screen. However....

When I went to go put back the oil filter screen housing cover, I began to torque the bolts to their specified torque as per the service manual, and the first one i was on just kept going and going, i hesitated and then realized i was still using the most accurate torque wrench i owned, continued, and then it snapped off completely. The others ones were "tight" but not torqued, and I left them as is. Now the bike is leaking oil at a rate of about 1 drop per 30 seconds or so. Is there a fix for this, a way to seal off that bolt hole? or dare I attempt to take the cover off and fish that bolt out with vise grips? Id rather not....

Still have my electrical demons to slay, but I may be moving the bike north to have my father help me fix it as he is much more technical than me, even though i live vicariously through the machine....
