Hey you xs guys, I just bought a 1979 xs 400 with a hard tail mod, engines in a box, triple trees need bearings, need rubbers for engine mounts, a new front axle.... that sort of thing. My question is what other years of bike are compatible with this ride? Any help would be great!
:umm:

For those sort of parts any sohc xs400 77-82 used the same stuff.

but on a modded bike, make sure you are really talking about XS parts. Engine mountings and front wheel might be also modded:wink2:

Yep, '77 to '82 on most hard parts. Different rear wheel after '79 and different ignition as well.

...and let me preface this by saying- hey, anyone who owns a bike can express themselves however they want with it, have at it. That being said, I've never been out riding my XS400 and said to myself: "Know what this really needs? No rear suspension!"

i'd *like to think* that at least some hard tail conversions, on any bike, are less about "self expression" and more about speed. ditching that incredibly heavy swingarm sheds a significant percentage of the bike's overall weight, resulting in a considerably faster ride. of course, we all know the world is full of hipsters and douchebags. (i hope the OP doesn't mind me saying that, given he bought the frame that way.) While the best of both worlds is probably an aluminum swingarm mod, i'm sure that conversion is well out of reach of a lot of people's skills. mine included. would i hard tail my XS? Hell No. does my Harley have a hard tail? Hell Yes. is it uncomfortable to ride? Hell Yes. kills my damn kidneys in no time.

You know my bike is my bike and I will do the best I can to make it somewhat of a desirable ride, all you guys that think these XS 400 are bikes ( in original form) are kidding yourselves! I will say they would be a good starter bike for my 14 year girl and well as soon as she got use to ridding one, guess what I would probably pass it on to her younger sister, or my grandma...... I got this hard tail conversion and a parts bike complete for $200 at the swap meet last week because the guy that had it couldnt get a dime for this girls bike! so I will finish it as a Hardtail and let me girls learn to ride on it and then sell it for a few thousand, because it aint worth a dam the way you GIRLS ride them! And let me guess Iron HEAD you probably ride a Sportster too, is it pink???
kep on riding MO-FU! keep you use-less opinions too your self and be safe!!
you too Hough made and Drewpy....? WTF is Drewpy????

wow dude, I think they were all just joking...I know you're new here and you probably havent been on the forums much before this but the guys you just blasted are some of the most knowledgeable and experienced guys on this forum in regards to questions about the xs400. If you go through the posts you'll find their replies in almost every other post. They've probably answered every question anyone here has asked at least several times over because newer members tend not to use the search function. They are just having a little fun with no ill intentions. Just relax, no one is knocking you. We have many known members with hardtails and no one said you were a wuss or anything of that nature because of your bike. Its kinda of unnessary to turn around and start calling everyone else here little girls because we have xs400s. Calm down, make some friends. You'll find that more people are willing to help you if you dont come in with a big ego and attitude.

oh yea and there is a member here named Travis, correct me if I'm wrong other member but I think he runs this site. He actually builds and sells hardtail conversions for the xs400 on here too. So no, we here dont hate on hardtails.

first of all, congratulations on picking up your XS for $200. that sounds like a good price - even for a basket case. secondly, did you really just post that? did you really just blatantly trash the very motorcycle platform that this entire site is dedicated to and based upon, right after you bought one and then asked the members here for help?? y'know… if you read my post carefully you would understand that i was basically defending hard tail conversions - across the board - and by extension, defending YOUR XS. while these bikes are certainly not KTM Super Dukes, Aprilia Shivers or Ducati Monsters, your assertion that they're only fit for teenage girls or the elderly to use to learn to ride is asinine. in your post, you also imply that your finished project will be more valuable than all of our bikes because, "… it aint worth a dam the way you GIRLS ride them". that makes no sense whatsoever. none. i'll just have to make a guess as to whether you're stupid, drunk, or both. i honestly didn't intend to start some shit fight here, but your comments are extremely offensive. and you guessed correctly: the Harley i mentioned is a 42 year old Sportster, and i seriously doubt you could handle it. i would love to watch you struggle to even start it. (no, it isn't pink, it's pitted chrome and flat black, but mostly rust.) good luck to you, brother. go take your anger and pour it into your project. then sell it for "a few thousand" and come back here and show all of us what idiots we are.

I know these bikes are not the fastest coolest or worth a lot of money but I love to ride them stock and modded. My 79 was the first road bike I ever had. So it was a great starter bike as also for others And I tell you what when I go riding with friends or go to shows it gets a lot more people asking about it than a $20k bike that everyone has or seen before:wink2:

Here's an owner with a realistic opinion of what his hardtail will bring. :wink2:
But it isn't worth even that until a willing buyer forks over the cash.In my (limited) experience, willing buyers will usually fork over a bigger pile of cash for an original xs400 than for almost any other version - Drewpy's creations and their like excepted of course.

I agree that original bikes get the money. People don't want someones hack job or version of what a bike "should" be like. When I sold my modded xs650 it ran awesome and looked cool but it was not factory. I spent $1200 to build it and got 2K for it. I was ok with that because I rode it for two years and put over 2k miles on it:thumbsup:

I'd be interested in seeing a bike clocked before and after a hardtail conversion. Otherwise this claim of being so much faster seems a little dubious to me.

I get the feeling op wont be back here anytime soon or will be putting up very few posts after his little tantrum. Anyone else noticed he changed his info from canada to us and all his albums are gone haha

Perhaps he was Hough-miliated and slinked out the country with his tail Drewping between his legs ....

You guys crack me up with your corny jokes. :)
On days when it's too cold to ride an xs400 any distance, we need an outlet for our nervous energy.
Being xs400 lovers we are, naturally, highly intelligent. And being so, cyber-bullying would be, therefore, beneath us.
But who doesn't love dumping a big load of corn?
