Are they all the same size or are the 650`s or 750`s larger?Do they all mount the same with the rubber bushing or is there changes?I would also like to stay with a XS tank if possible.I dont have a welder or any tools for fabricating.
Thanks for your help?

The xs650 tank will not fit the 400. The 750 tank only fits with mods to the bike. If you want to with some work you could get any tank to fit but because of the three back bones of the frame there are few options for this bike.

I don't know of any that are bolt on and go but maybe someone else on here knows:shrug:

I have a similar question, except it's regarding an '82 Maxim. I do have a welder, but don't feel confident with the thought of cutting and welding a tank to increase it's capacity...

Thanks,
Dave

the european '79 to '81 models have 16 (some say 17) liter tanks. I think in Amerika you got only 14.

The U.S tanks (other thank the 77D and78 2-E) are 17.3 (4.5 gal) total with the reserve capacity. It sucks to drain a full tank when you store them in the winter, takes forever:banghead::laugh:

Maybe I can find one on Ebay or see if i can find someone to help me mod.I have neighbor who has a freind that works on bikes and has access to the tools needed. Its not something I need right away anyways.I know that my tank has a dent about the size of golfball I would like to get out.I havent tryed though.Im not dure if dry ice would get it or not.

thanks for the notice. On pictures they all look like our SE-tanks.

The draining problem is waiting for me too

To bring this up does anyone know if the box style tanks are compatible with the 82 XS special? The backbone looks the same but the tank looks to be shorter or is that an oprical illusion?

By box style, you mean this style?

As you can see, it's a little shorter and creates a gap between the seat+tank. Also, the mounting is a little off. Not a big deal to remedy... but just a heads up that it's not a drop in, bolt on replacement. But, the front rubber mounts are the same and line up.

You guys are the best I realy appreciated the replys.Yes that is the tank I was describing. So with the pic the rear mouting hole sits ontop of where the regular tank would normaly cover. Can I drill a hole in that spot and or have nut welded to where I can install a mount?

^ yeah that would be the easiest way to go about doing it.

i would suggest drilling a hole, welding in a threaded bung just for support/strength as opposed to the nut idea.

Exactly, the zinc bolt in the pic is where the stock 80+ tank bolts up. I plan on drilling a hole in that cross plate, then welding a nut to the bottom. If you don't weld it, it's tricky to hold it when you go to tighten it. Plus, vibrations may loosen it off. I don't think the plate is thick enough to simply drill & tap (I wouldnt trust it anyway).

Keep your eyes out on ebay for tanks, thats where I got mine. I think I paid around $75 shipped. Dont know if you noticed the sticker in the pic, but XS360 tanks are the same.

Another way to mount the tank without welding is to attach a bracket to the existing mount and extend it to the tab on the tank. One homemade bracket, two drilled holes and a nut and bolt.

Well I can get an original tank or the other style tanks no problem either way.Im also thinking of cutting the top of mine off and fixing dents and then have it welded back on.Withour changing seats I dont realy likehow the tank and seat dont match up.On the other hand it would look better than the tank I have right now.I have never cut a tank before but I have the tools to do it.I would have to pay to get it welded back up or make 40 mile round trip to one of my buddies that has a mig welder.Either way its going to cost me.If I would have listened to my gut and a rumor I heard I wouldnt be in the predictment to begin with:banghead:

I seen that thread a while back the poster did a great job.I realy dont want to go that route though I just want a nice looking dent free tank.

I too am looking for a shorter tank than my stock 82 maxim tank..but finding 1 with a wide enough valley to fit the ugly square backbone is hard..nt sure what tanks fit either..just need a shorter tank..
