its not impossible to make other front ends (including wheel) work, biggest issue is steering stem length. Easy fix for that is to press in the original stem OR make a spacer to take up the gap.
Has worked a few times. Just a bearing change but youll need the forks and triples to do it. Some spacer work and you can reuse the original tire, or just go all out and buy the whole front end. Either way, if you're in the US, its gunna cost.
I live like hour and a half from you and I see XS400s & XS500s popup around here on craigslist all the time. Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Goldsboro are good areas for them.

Looks good, but most certainly not $2500 good. I paid $700 for my '81 and $300 for my wifes '81. Thats 2 XS400s (not to mention hers came with a box full of spare parts, including like 5 ignitions, 4 air filters, coils, etc) for $1000.

Dont put to much water pressure when washing near the axles. Blowing out a bearing seal isnt a fun thing to realize happened later when you're doing 65mph on the highway.
omg....I have one more picture to request. A picture of the bike from the back, as straight in line as can be. I can only imagine what happened to bend everything like that.
I have one from an '81 that had spokes with drum, if yours is bent and anyone here can verify itll fit, you can have it at the cost of shipping. Do you have the carbs? Thats one thing ive noticed missing and havent seen any mention of having.
Some bikes, like supermotos, use a pressure style switch that replaces the bolt for the banjo fitting. Most have some kind of switch attached with a spring to the brake pedal though.
