    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

Did the carb boots get replaced? They look cracked and can cause a vacuum leak like that.

runs and then dies + more

How do the air filters look? clogged? That could cause a rich condition which would be okay while the engine is cold but once it warms up it will cause problems. Do you use the enrichener (choke) to start the engine? How does it affect running?

SoraXS400 that isn't necessary. Your vacuum petcock has a "prime" position wich allows fuel to run without a vacuum signal.

What did you do with your XS today?

Okay, thanks. I thought I looked a while ago for 90° filters like that but couldn't find any reasonably priced online. I found some now though, thanks. Good tip regarding ethanol.

    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

The uncapped barb is supposed to have a line run from it to the vacuum petcock. The vacuum petcocks often get replaced with manual petcocks, your bike may or may not have one. If you do not have a vacuum petcock that barb needs to be capped off or it turns into a massive vacuum leak.

Where did you get that fuel filter xschris? Looks like it works well there.

    Looking for some suggestions

I think the carb overflowing fuel is more likely to be needle and seat. Of course its related to the floats mentioned above, but different. As for the poor running issue you should start with giving the carbs a good clean. The overflowing fuel and running only with some choke suggests the...

Yes, I have not used colortune, its a cool idea but it seems to have some pretty obvious flaws. I think it is great for tuning idle fueling, but really tuning fueling for any other throttle position is out of the question or unsafe. Unless you have a dyno. But then, if you have a dyno you likely...

I will chime in here as well. I recommend fixing the leak and seeing if the bike runs ok before you tear anything down. If the bike runs okay after you fix the leak then great, ride it as is for a while! Fix issues as they pop up (they will!) and acquire the skill and tools (little by little) to...

I saw on page 3 that the carb boots were looking a little worse for wear, glad you replaced them. You will be too. good looking exhaust as well. I'm curious how it will affect your jetting. What is the plan for intake?

    Choosing main crankshaft bearings

I believe that is how it works with the bearing numbers, yes. I really don't feel too qualified to be giving advice on bearing sizes. If the bearings were easily available and not too expensive then I would say just get what the literature tells you to. However since they are apparently tough to...

    Choosing main crankshaft bearings

The rows in that chart don't necessarily correspond with each other from column to column. What I mean is that there is no tie between crankcase no.3, crank journal no.1 and Journal bearing no.1. It is just a coincidence that Crankcase no.4, Crank journal no.2 and Journal bearing no.2 are all in...

    Anyone prefer original Buckhorns?

Yeah I mean I can do it , it's just not comfortable for me. for me it just isn't a solid position for fighting wind. I have ridden the bike for decent distances on the freeway and find myself wanting to lean forward into the wind which really puts my wrists and arms at an awkward angle. Mind you...
