    Replacement regulator/rectifier

Just a quick update: shortly after my original post, I purchased and installed the following regulator/rectifier: https://www.amazon.com/GooDeal-Regulator-Rectifier-TRX300FW-Fourtrax/dp/B010P78VUI/ref=sr_1_173?keywords=motorcycle+voltage+regulator&qid=1558359162&s=automotive&sr=1-173 I've only...

    1981 XS400 Special Build

In my (limited experience), if the trans is stuck in gear, the rear wheel will be "locked" but still have a little of play in it, maybe an inch or two in rotation. If the rear brakes are locked, it won't budge at all. Quick way to tell would be to remove the chain.

    Replacement regulator/rectifier

That's all good info, thank you. When you say "may not have enough draw on the system to balance the regulator," are you suggesting that the regulator has an output impedance that needs to be "matched?" I suppose that makes sense; I know they'll read a lot higher output voltage if not connected...

    Replacement regulator/rectifier

Oops, sorry -- It's a 1980 XS400G (Special II). I was using a a small 12V alarm battery until it got cooked. Now I'm using a more traditional motorcycle battery, sealed lead acid -- a 5LBS. It's overkill, really, for what I need, but I was stranded and the Advance Auto was a few blocks away...

    Replacement regulator/rectifier

Has anyone had any luck replacing the stock rectifier and voltage regulator (two separate components) with one of the combination regulator rectifier units out there? I recently replaced my voltage regulator with a BWD R296 per this thread. It worked fine for about two weeks, then the regulator...

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

Main jets are stock, but air filters are not. I'm using the stock 'H" intake boot with 6" Uni filters, per XSChris' recommendation. Not sure if jet resizing is needed with that setup.

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

Addendum III: So far, I've been operating under the presumption that the idle issue is related to the electrical issue. This may or may not be the case, but if anything, the idle issue is the first problem. I tested the bike last night on the center stand for about fifteen minutes, running with...

Addendum II: Regarding the usage of the alarm battery, I'm not special. Check this old thread. Apparently it has been done successfully.

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

This is the battery I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KC399SY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Bit of an experiment, but it's actually performed quite well thus far. I know it's for alarm system/UPS applications, but given that I've removed the bike starter, it's...

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

The pick-up sensor and TCI box are both stock. I happen to have an extra TCI box that I purchased back toward the beginning of my build when I was chasing down other gremlins.

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

Some additional information: - Both ignition coils tested good (primary at 3 ohms apiece); I have not tested the secondary - The rectifier tested good (diode test), prior to all of this. It sounds to me that, as the bike warms up, something is progressively pulling more current, starving the...

Bike warms, inconsistent idle, blows fuses

So here's one for you... I'm nearing the end of my '80 XS400G project (original post here) and am having an issue that only rears its head when the bike warms up and has been ridden a mile or two. First symptom is the idle: with the clutch in or while stopped at an intersection, the idle will...

1981 XS400...First bike , first project, first post

Congrats. That's a fine looking bike for the price. Hopefully you won't have to put too much into it (time and money). As I'm sure you know, there's a wealth of information on this forum. Take advantage of it, learn from it, employ it. Welcome.

Advice on squeezing carbs into boots

Thanks, Mike. They are aftermarket boots and they are a TIGHT fit. I considered some kind of lubricant to help getting them into place, but wasn't sure what would be "safe" to use, or if any of you more experienced folks had success and/or issues with that. The ratchet strap is actually a really...
