Introduction and Advice Needed, for 83 maxim XS400

Check to make sure your clutch is properly adjusted, should be in the manuals that are sticky'ed at the top. Mine still spins a bit while on the center stand, but it's not noticable when the bike is on the ground. Sometimes though, clutch plates can get stuck together after a long time of...

    Struggling above 7000 rpm

Working on other projects (49cc scooters), I've found pod filters to be more trouble than they are worth. They never seem to work right and seem to have variable flow, making tuning quite difficult. I would put the stock airbox on, but if you don't have that I would replace with a large foam...

Yamaha maxim 400 1982 won't start no igntiotion

Ok, I have an '82 Seca (DOHC, should be very similar to yours) and I had a lot of electrical issues similar to you, where there would be no spark on either side that would come and go. Same issue, when the cranking would stop/killswitch would be stopped I would see a spark. A few questions...

Repair XS400 DOHC Pulsar Pickup Coil

Ok, update for my problem. Looking at the circuit diagram I saw that the neutral cutoff relay was in the ignition circuit and decided to test it by bridging the red/white wires that are connected when the neutral gear switch is engaged. Fired right up! I've attached pictures of it, it's a black...

getting spark to plug only by turning stop/run switch!

Ok, update. So the problem would appear/disappear seemingly at random, I was starting to lose my mind. Finally, looking at the circuit diagram I saw that the neutral cutoff relay was in the ignition circuit and decided to test it by bridging the red/white wires that are connected when the...

Repair XS400 DOHC Pulsar Pickup Coil

I apologize for the delay, but I finally got around to starting to troubleshoot over the weekend with the good weather that we had. Ran through the ignition checklist n the manual: check connectors -> battery voltage -> fuze continuity -> coil resistance -> pick up coil resistance and...

Repair XS400 DOHC Pulsar Pickup Coil

It got rained on over the weekend (forgot my cover before I left town) and I road to work monday morning with no issues at all, signals worked fine. Went to start it when I was ready to go home and it would crank over fine but not catch; eventually found out there was no spark on either side...

getting spark to plug only by turning stop/run switch!

Indeed, this post and the Pulsar coil rebuild both appear suspiciously familiar to me. Hopefully these are some hints as to what is going wrong, it's going to require a lot of electrical troubleshooting to figure it out.

Repair XS400 DOHC Pulsar Pickup Coil

I'll get some contact cleaner and get to working on it, gonna tow it tomorrow. Pretty sure the fuses are fine based on continuity, but the box is a mess, PO had soldered in one of the fuses. I hear the relays under the tank clicking when I switch the key to on and the handlebar switch to on, but...

Repair XS400 DOHC Pulsar Pickup Coil

Very cool! Would you be able to describe your initial problem in more detail? You replaced the left pickup coil but couldn't get it started and you found this faulty diode? Where was it wired into and what was its purpose? The reason I ask is I'm having a problem right now where I can't get...

getting spark to plug only by turning stop/run switch!

Sorry to revive a long dead thread, but I am having nearly the exact same issue with my DOHC 1982 XS400 Seca. I road in the morning, the day after my bike had been in the rain, to work with no issue. When I was about to head home, I tried to start it and it turned over fine but wouldn't go/catch...

    Xs400j problems

You had said earlier that it will only run with the petcock on prime. Is that still true now that you have taken it apart and presumably cleaned it? Is the vacuum tube connected to the intake? Does the petcock function correctly: 1: When it is on run/reserve, does no gas flow while the engine...

    what could have happened?

Half of your plug from one cylinder is one color and the other half is different? Or one plug from one cylinder looks different from the other cylinder? Got any pictures? If it's the former, I've not heard of that and I don't know what it could be. Draw a mark on the plug while it's screwed it...

Introduction and Advice Needed, for 83 maxim XS400

Depending on your locations could you find a storage unit to get the bike to? If you can get one, especially with power (for heat and tools), you can use it as a temporary workshop to get everything going. I would say if your compression test is good based on NewHavenMike's suggestion, you might...
