'78 bike that's older than me

Bought an '78 xs400 and I have no idea which model I have. having trouble locating vin decoder for a bike this old. The bike's Vin starts at 2L.

Looking to cafe it but the bike is in pieces with 9K on the odo. Previous owner was going to Bober it but had too many other projects going on.

Welcome, If the date stamp on the bike is 78 and first three letters are 2L0 than its a 1979 xs400f

Welcome Lemond.
As someone who is TWICE as old as his xs400 let me tell you that your bike can be kept in top form.
But, even with lifelong proper maintenance, you cannot. :wink2:

have to deal with rust in the tank first
put back the exhaust, seat, and handlebar,
Looks like all the pieces are there in the box PO gave me, I just gotta put them back altogether...
