So I've ridden and worked on a number of 400cc bikes over the years but I just picked up my first 1984 Yamaha XS400. I picked her up for $270 not running and without registration. The registration doesn't bother me as I've jumped through the hoops before with a couple previous projects, and with an initial carb clean got her running the other day but I think I'll need to clean them again as its not hitting on both cylinders equally yet.

The biggest issue however, and the one that this lengthy post is pertaining to, is that its missing the front brake master cylinder. My first thought was to hit up my local bike wrecker and pick one up, but since anything I pick up there would likely need a rebuild, I decided to see what aftermarket options were out there and came across this MC on amazon.

The only reason I haven't ordered this yet is because it says it ships from china. Which with brake components makes me slightly nervous. So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular MC or if there is another reasonably priced alternative that they would recommend.

Hey Dude,
I put the same M/C on my 83 maxim 400 last month. Bought mine from my local Yamaha dealer. Paid $100. looks the same as the one you posted and is identical to the original. Just doesn't have YAMAHA cast into the cover plate. Has been working great. Just make sure the bore is the same. I believe mine was 13mm. The wrong m/c bore size will affect the lever travel and pressure required to give same stopping force.

Hey Ken56, how much smaller is the new Master cylinder compared to the old one? I've been looking for something more compact to go with my drag bars. You dont happen to have a pic of both side by side for comparison do you?

I bought this exact MC off eBay, largely because the guy is located in the US (only took a few days). It was only $25 last month when I got it.

Only real difference is that it's not black, but it doesn't really stand out to me, and for $25 shipped for me, hard to beat. I have it installed now and it works perfectly. Brake lever is even more firm than my other bike after bleeding.

Sorry sly, this won't work for you. The replacement m/c is identical to the original, just didn't have 'yamaha' stamped into the cover plate.

Another question for you all. I don't suppose anyone would know off hand what the size and thread pitch of the front calliper bolts is? The parts fiches show a bolt, a washer, and a lock washer. But there are no mentions of size, length or thread pitch.

Also if anyone would happen to know the size and thread pitch for the screws that hold the airbox in that would also be great since all mine are missing....

Dam.. I think I spent more than that just for a master cylinder kit to rebuild my old one...
I got to learn to shop this stuff better!

thanks guys , I'm rebuiding my front brake sys also and I shied away from that Chinese mfd master cylinder. Now I'm going to order it and complete my bike.
