i just got an xs400 in a fair condition. Im new here, and im trying to restore this beauty, and i've already downloaded the service manual here, thanks to that. My problem is i cant find where the clutch cable goes on my engine,i didnt see clutch pedal when i picked up the bike. Is there any possibility at all that my xs400 could have a semi automatic transmission? Plz help. Thanks in advance

What year is your xs? There is no clutch pedal. The clutch is controlled by the hand lever on the left side of the handlebars. If you have a SOHC engine, the clutch cable goes in on the left side of the engine above the sprocket.

Its a 1980 xs400. I have checked the engine a dozen times but still cant the operating system for the clutch. I'll send detailed images of the engine. Thanks.

Yes pictures are a must, generally they're lever operated and a cable would run from the left hand grip, down the spine and drop down to the left side cover near the primary sprocket. Sometimes thought people will install suicide/jocky shifters. 2 styles usually, one will have a foot pedal (forward control) and the other will be a lever on a handle that attaches to the shifter. Either way the cable will end at that side cover.

There are centrifugal clutches out there that as the rpms increase the clutch will be engaged. I have no idea if there exist a kit or if one could be modified to fit the XS. Pictures will help.

Percy, the attachment point is on the actual aluminum cover itself (the rearmost one, which covers the chain drive sprocket), which is removed in your pic. I hope you have that part. I have a 1980 as well, so I am quite sure.

And Kiliman, that's a very interesting modification. It looks like it took some careful machine work. And the aluminum finish on your engine is stupendous! Could you share the order of operations? (i.e., what series of grits if you sanded or buffed it, etc)

Thanks kiliman for the pic that was very helpful, that's one less problem to worry about. Yet more matters arise, it seems that my gearchange shaft has been stripped, like someone tried to change through gears holding it with a pair of pliers. Is there maybe a way to get it fixed or would i have to replace the whole thing? And with the help of a wiring diagram i found here i was able to get my wiring done neatly and now it looks awesome, thanks to the XS fanatics, but i have one small problem, the wiring diagram shows that there are 3 wires from the main switch (RED, BROWN, and BLUE), but from my main switch there's (RED, BROWN, BLUE, and BLUE/RED), its a 1980 xs400sg. What do i make of that?
