Project - Black and Gold

^ Couldn't agree more... And I know a couple things about those hack job builds. I have two of them in my garage LOL

Alright... It's been a looong time since I posted an update. I ended up picking up a couple more bikes, selling a couple, but in the background, my XS400 has been making some progress.

This past weekend, I went and picked it up from my sheet metal guy. Custom gas tank and tail section complete.

One-off, press-in vented gas cap. Love the bead detail he did around the radius. Insane work...

I've still got a TON of work left to do on this guy, but it's getting a hell of a lot closer...

That is a solid bike man, I don't really know what to classify it as, but it looks well done so far. I'm liking the tail section and that curve around. Can't wait to see it all finished up!

I gotta ask, how is the riding position and comfort levels?

You'd be surprised, but it's actually a pretty comfortable ride for being a bobber! I've gone on a 200+ mile ride with no problems, aches or pains. I gave him creative freedom when I dropped it off, and the knee dents he put in the tank really help hug the bike. I might go back to some riser bars if anything, but overall it's a pretty solid ride.

Wow what a great job you done so far,I like the led head light.I think Im going to try and go that route on my bike also.
my bike is mostly stock and haven't done any major mods to the frame.Got a set of Euro bars and nice slip stream windshield which I still got to get a pic and show off.I like to see pics of your bike in color if you get a chance.

That sheet metal is unreal. Where are you located and who is your sheet metal guy?

I'm in Seattle, WA. All my sheet metal work was done by Joe Cooper of CooperSmithing Co. World Champion bike builder, and one of the best sheetmetal/fabricators I know.

In total, I spent $1,000 on the sheetmetal work, including the tank, rear cowl, seat pan and upholstery mold. The amount of detail he out into everything blows my mind, all the way down to the custom, vented press in gas cap with a rolled edge.

How did you get the bicycle pedal on the kick starter? Ive always wanted to do that

Cut and weld. It was actually pretty easy!

I've heard horror stories about the cast metal of the kick start arm either melting or not holding a weld. My little 120v Hobart welder handled it just fine.
