My build progress so far......

Couple more pics of some recent progress..........

Got some new(used) risers/clamps to replace the tired XS ones I had. They're from an unknown Jap bike. They're a bit more substantial than the ones I had fitted.Just fitted some new Allen head bolts, and brass washers, and they're good to go:thumbsup:.

Also, finally got my axle pullers/adjusters done:).
I had to use a couple of barrel connector nuts to lengthen them,as they were too short at they're original length. They are for a triumph. Now I can get rid of the original adjusters, and tidy up the rear a bit:thumbsup:

I'm a fan of fat stainless hardware :)

What is that threaded rod connected to the axle for? Alignment?

Yes mate......the threaded rod is connected to the 'O' Ring type 'pullers' that the axle fits through.By adjusting the length of the rod,you move the wheel forward or backwards in the frame, and ensure it is aligned correctly.I will probably make a chain adjuster, using an arm, spring and skateboard wheel and fitted to the frame tube for fine adjustment of the drivetrain.:wink2:

Something along the lines of these:

I was thinking about one of those chain tensioners/rollers myself. I run very tight clearances as it is and I don't want the chain hitting the swing-arm. That would solve the problem for sure.

The two I posted pictures of were on Ebay for around £35/40.......$55/60
Probably could make one for a fraction of that

I suppose you could have it self adjusting,by means of a spring, like the first picture OR
adjust it manually,by rotating the position, like i'm guessing you would need to on the second one,as it has no spring?
If you had it clamped on one of the lower frame tubes, this should be possible by means of rotation around the tube.:)
I have not got started on figuring it out yet, other than I will probably use a skateboard wheel rather than a sprocket,as I think it looks cooler:thumbsup: LOL

This is all imaginative stuff! I like the rear shock for seat cushion, brass accents and wild headers. Bike reaks of steam punk in the best way possible. Now you just need a well fitted vest and a pocket watch made of brushed finish brass

Forgot to mention: might be a good idea to use a non stainless (oxide hardened) steel bolts for bar clamp. Stainless is not too strong. You'll probably be fine, but worth consideration. Whatever you do don't use brass for these bolts

Cheers Tombo......
The seat shock is an enclosed MTB one.The shroud is meant to keep out the dirt and dust.I think it looks cool and it takes my weight OK!!
I didn't really have a set in stone plan for the style of the bike.
It had to be a hardtail, and it had to be low and long(8ft wheel centres).:yikes:
It's just kind of evolved as it's gone along.....
Iv'e changed the tank three times now:doh:,and just bought a vintage tail light of Ebay, make unknown. It needs a good refurb, and has a crack in the lense, but i can make a new one.
I think it's really cool(but then I thought that when I bought the ford duolamp!! lol)
Iv'e also just bought a harley rear fender(Ebay again!!)
I'll trim it up and fit it if i like the look.It will be short as possible, like my existing fender.
Thanks for the tip on the S/S Allen bolts.....I did not know that.
I think I will change them for some non stainless ones for peace of mind.I just had the S/S bolts to hand when I changed the risers.
Thanks again for the comments.....:cheers::bike:

Good call! If it were my life riding on the SS bolts, I'd certainly choose stronger if I knew about it.

I admire people who can see the big picture the way you can. I can get down and dirty, clean, make shit work nice - but I'm never particularly proud of finishing work when it comes to paint, etc. Cheers!

Thanks mate.....

Just checked out your LED light conversion thread.....
Might go for that on my new tail light

The rattle can paintwork on your side covers looks alright to me BTW!!:wink2:

Funny you should mention rattle can side covers. My XS is stock paint still (week need to repaint tank in next free years due to minor tidy that van only get worse here in foggy salty San Francisco)

However, my xj650 had the 1980 maroon tank with the 81 bright red side covers when I got it. Made me want to puke. Rattled them black to not draw attention to themselves. Maybe not the prettiest thing, but sufficient while it was a riding project. Woof.

I am thinking about doing a paint marker job by hand. I can draw a bit and I really like the work I've seen other people do.

I've got a buddy who does lots of art, including comic books and stuff. He's always hard up, but has always admired my bikes. He is also not mechanically inclined. Been looking for a bike I can get cheap and fix for him, then trade him for a paint job on one of my bikes, perhaps the xs. He said putting white down first is the important thing to make the fine detail work pop, so probably a good idea to start there bc
