'81 xs400 carb question

Hi all,

Brand new member and xs400 owner!

I just purchased an '81 xs400 special. I got it running after a battery charge and it sounds pretty good but the carbs were in need of a good cleaning. So I've done a fair amount of research and it appears that where the idle fuel mixture screws go there is a plug and not a screw.

Just wondering if this is normal or what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The photo below shows the area I'm referencing.

I doesn't appear to. i have no way of turning it though. there's nothing to grab on to.

They where capped from the factory. You will need to drill out the brass plug. Just go slow and don't press hard or you will damage the screw under it. I think there is a thread on this in the forum.

so the idle mix is not supposed to be adjustable??

Not on the newer emission controlled bikes. I want to say starting in 1980, the carbs had those plugs. You can remove them, however.

Maybe there is another member close enough to help. Once it is done it wouldn't need to be done ever again. Then you could remove them to clean or replace if needed.
