For all us bikers out there that don't have the luxury of a private garage or secured parking, what steps do you take to ensure your bike is safe throughout the nights and times when you leave your bike at home and are away?

I have a designated spot at my house where I park my bike and nose my car up to it, but it is open and public - no security. My fears are that the bikes are pretty light should some one really like my paint job. Or worse some SOB decides to push my bike over onto the hood of my car!

If I was in your situation, I'd anchor some heavy plate steel to the ground with loops to attach chains or cables to lock it to. Then I'd get some thick mil black plastic sheeting or (if it doesn't need to be waterproof) some old kingsize bed sheets and using spray paint or dye cosmetically alter them to look filthy when clean. Cover the bike constantly when not in use. Most thieves are lazy and only covet what they see and if they get ballsy enough to peek under an apparently filthy cover and then see that it will be actual work to do anything with your ride they will probably move on to something easier.

My two cents.

Keeping it covered is a good start. If I'm away for a while I put a good padlock on the disc brake (don't forget the leash to the handlebars so you don't forget about it and ride away!), and put it on the steering lock.

Sure, it could be lifted onto a cart and rolled away, but there are probably enough inconveniences to deter thieves and have them looking for another bike. In the end, it's not an expensive bike, so unless they've got some sort of nostalgia going on they'd probably look for something that would turn better profit.

There is no 100% solution, so just make it harder to steal your bike. Easiest way, a motorcycle wheel lock or chain locked through the wheels. It can be defeated, but it takes time. It it don't roll, it's a lot harder to steal. Sure it can be lifted....but that isn't easy. You and a buddy try it some time.

If people want to steal it bad enough they will. No use trying to come up with something foolproof, just do something that makes it harder and takes longer....and being in a lighted area doesn't hurt.

Now....back to my garage.
