What did you do with your XS today?

Started my 81 xs400 for the first time after a few weeks of fault finding since picking up in bits in August (managed to put in the back of a VW golf. Main issue was previous owner installing the timing cam the wrong way round.

Will add a build thread in the coming week as has been a long process with carb cleaning, fuel tank lining and generally correcting partial build errors from the previous owner.

Picked up some 1/8th npt threaded bungs to weld into my new tank. Am going with an old school style sight fuel gauge on the side of the tank. I with be cutting out the 22mm threaded bung and adding one of the 1/8th ones and going with a spigot style petcock. Tank will getting inside costing and paint in a few weeks. Guy at work is going to hang it and paint it for me. Can't wait to see it.

Today I was positive I could push start my 76 360 to start it because it has low amps after a winter off the battery tender. (thanks unreliable alcoholic friend! )

The bike and I ended up at the bottom of ever, and I mean EVERY hill I could roll it down trying to get the engine to catch.

New battery purchase imminent. I feel as I should be hung by my jumper cables for my failure.

Time for a new friend also:wink2:

Unfortunately I can relate to your trouble. But my unreliable friend was my alter ego. Sometimes when I least expect it George shows up. My unreliable dyslexic alter ego. The only way I can explain some of those moments when I do something so stupid that there seems to be NO reasonable explanation. Like riding my trike down the 13 steps to the street when I was 6. ??? I've come to think that may be when George showed up.

Laid up the third and fourth layers of fibreglass on my seatpan, but I was very slightly short on epoxy so I'l going to go over this layup with some more once it cures.

Made some engine brackets out of T6 aluminum.

Got my welded chain guard back today. Will grind the weld seam and paint tomorrow. Might slightly hammer-in the guard where the suspension is rubbing against it.

Also tore down the carbs. Boiled the bowls, poked wire through all passageways and jets.. All circuits seem clear.

Blowing into the carbs with the butterfly valves closed results in a lot of air flow out around the butterfly shaft seals. They're brand-new from Mike's/xs650direct. I'd heard some negative reviews of their seals but had been optimistic.

Will try greasing them up. Maybe they're backwards?

Today I fabbed up some more decent minimal wiring for my starting & testing setup... I haven't got the engine running yet, but who knows.
Should run without battery power to the coils soon!
[EDIT]

Okay, so this is the scheme I've got going on right now, pulled it from the wiring thread and adapted it for clarity and correctness.
I have pretty much ignored the brown wire, mostly because I didn't understand the purpose of the connection between red and brown wire (indicated by the green arrow) which I have come to think is crucial.

I guess the generator creates an alternating current and brown and red together make one steady current? I'm not sure...

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Many thanks!

You need a battery to get the bike to run with the type of charging systems they have. http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13929&highlight=battery There are more threads on this in the forum.
