One of the 1981 XS400 bikes is finished and ready to deliver to its new owner...

Here are some pics of the bike. This one sports pod filters, replaced handlebars, Burgess mufflers... (That sound absolutely fantastic...) And gaiters replacing the dust boots...

Take a look and let me know what you think...

Thanks. I am having a bitch of a time with the Carbs. Makes me want to start a new business replacing all these old crappy Mikuni junk carbs with a nice throttle body FI system. If I was 20 years younger and had a 100 gs I would design and sell FI kits to replace all this crap we put up with . Both Keihun and Mikuni are pure crapware. Mikuni slightly worse... but not much difference when both major examples of fuel delivery were designed by morons (mostly regarding the inability to easily take them apart to clean and re-assembly... They should have taken much greater care to ease the cleaning requirement, as well as making the internal port sizes (the drill holes) larger to prevent the gum buildup and blockage that occurs. I can fire up both my Bonnie and my Norton in 2-3 kicks after sitting over a year)). I would have thought that the Japanese carbs would be better than my old Amals on my Bonnie and Norton... Nope...

I love picking apart bad engineering...

Mike...

I've rebuilt hundreds of carbs with excellent results. I particularly like the Mikuni's, especially the BS34's. If you need some help or advice let me know.

Thanks for your kind offer. I will wait till i can get pics of my progress... I am able to get the bike running at 3000+ but only with the enrichening (choke) pulled out. It must be something major i screwed up.... I have 150 pounds on my compression guage...in both cylinders . I used to have float problems but I have solved that. I just discovered (I took another Mikuni apart) that I do not have the "plugs" in the float bowl. By plugs I think I mean the plug that pushes into the pilot jet housing. Dunno if this is a problem, but I plan on putting them in now that I have a pair. the carbs did not have them installed when i cleaned them. Thanks again for your kind offer...

PS I still would like to build a company that sells FI throttle body replacements.

No plugs on the XS400's

do you mean the pilot jet rubber plugs: http://www.mikesxs.net/product/48-5002.html

mine were all dried up, I'm sure not really doing much, replaced them with new ones from Mike's. Replaced some other parts inside the carbs at the same time, so hard to say what made the diff, but the bike's been running like a top since...:bike:

Hey guys!

Over the last few weeks I've been looking all over the xs400 site and others looking for how-tos on fork boots or gaiters. This link directs you to the xs650 forum where I dude provides directions for installing Rancho fork boots (model #RS1952)

http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12653&page=2

I did exactly as he suggested and they seem to fit just fine although I haven't ride tested them out yet. This involved taking the fork rods completely off the bike and removing the front wheel. They seem rugged enough and quite thick. I ordered them online and picked them up at Advance Auto the next day! Total price for two was $7.98 or $3.99 each.

I also dropped the forks down 3/4" by pushing the forks up through the top near the handlebars. I've seen other guys take the springs out and cut em down but this way was so fast and easy.

i just ordered the same ones from Dime City that @riotten22 mentioned. fit great. i have my forks lowered 22mm, which slightly compresses the boots and makes them not quite "straight," but i dont think anyone but myself would notice.

the upper and lower openings fit perfectly.

i did not stretch the bottom opening over the lower fork piece, i let them tuck into the space so they touch the fork seals (i think they look kinda dorky stretched over the lower fork)

Wow that's bad:eek: Never got the whole gaiter thing. Every bike that I have worked on with them always had a bunch of dirt and crap behind them after a while of use. The vent hole just keeps sucking dirt in and out as you ride. Keeping fork clean is much easier without them imho.
