Got a '79 xs400. The tach will slowly flutter up to 3k when started but will stay there, no more, and no less. And the speedometer will also flutter up to 30k (I live in canada so kph here) when moving but stays there until I stop. How do I fix/adjust these? The obviously work, but I need them to work properly. Can't find any info in the service manual.

Take the guages out of their metal buckets. Flip the guages over and use a screw drive or little pry bar and bend the metal lip seal holding the glass lens to the plastic case of the guage. Expand the metal just enough to separate the lens and metal seal from the plastic case. spray some brake cleaner on the metal gear parts. The old gease or oil in the parts get tacky over time and make the guages not operate correctly. Both of my guages on my 81 did the same thing two years apart. Just relube the parts with silicon spray before reassembling. Put the case and metal seal back together and use a punch and bend the seal back down and its all good. Just make sure you clean the finger prints off the glass before putting it back together.

Be careful with the spray cleaner. The paint on the dial faces comes off very easily. Solvents will destroy the paint in a heartbeat.

Am I on the right track here?

I think that will work but I bent the metal band on the back side of the gauge so you would not see the bent up metal.
