Back after a couple years of re-organizing life, I'd like to finish my 81 xs400h build.

I keep seeing in threads and on google something sticking out of the top of the petcock.

Is this a "filter"? Mine doesn't have one, and never seems to have had one and seemed to be running okay when I got it. Do I need one? Where might I find one? What is the name of this thing?

thanks

if you run an in-line fuel filter you don't need one. I don't have the filters on my Manual petcocks on any bike, I just run a 90* inline fuel filter.

I have something that looks like this

so I do not need one? Which means nothing is on top of the petcock it just bolts to the tank with both holes empty, correct?

It's not just a filter. It has a pipe inside this lest you have a reserve capacity by pulling from a higher point in the tank when on and a lower spot for reserve. It also will help keep the junk in the bottom of the tank from getting to the carbs by leaving about 1/2 of fuel in the tank. If you bike still has one keep it. :)

XSchris, but he has an inline filter so no junk should get into the carbs. The pipe should still be there, the filter just covers them both. Actually the bottom plastic comes up about 1/8" from the bottom with it not being there you can get all the gas in the tank.

The post 80 ones DON'T have the metal pipes in them. These are from a 80, 81 and 82 sohc xs400. Some late 79 models used these also.

Keeping gunk out of the petcock will probably prolong its life too. I kept the in-tank filter and added an inline.
Wouldn't mind switching to a 90 degree inline someday though.
