It is probably really obvious to everyone else, but I can only find the parts catalogue for my bike on this site. Cant seem to find the Service Manual - and i'll be doing a lot of serviceing...I found at least one "free download" on the net, but think that was a scam.

If I have to, I'll pay the $35 retail, but the cheapskate in me is looking for a free download.
Any tips appreciated. Scott

There is a Seca Manual available here, look at the top in the stickies. It is close enough to your Maxim that it will do. Some things are different, like tire sizes and the 6th gear in the transmission and such. If you do find a download, please post it here!

The service manuals can be download here for free and I use bikebandit for the oem mirofish and possible aftermarket part's for my 82 xs400j

I have a Yamaha dealer in my town and a case of beer has worked wonder's

There is nothing better than having the book in front of you while working on it:)

Unless it is having a computer in your workshop and PDF manuals that are searchable, can be zoomed into, don't get dirty, torn, or fall apart. And access to the internet and your entire music library! ;)

I have the manual on my laptop and my phone, but I'm always struggling with keeping my devices dirt free as well. Using my knuckles to navigate through the manual and such.. Would be great to have a laminated copy of the manual in print I think.

Hey guys,
I know this is an old thread but I'm fairly new to this and don't know educate. I've had my bike for about six months and now that winter's here and I have a workshop space (finally) I'm trying to get some work done. I have very little mechanic/bike working knowledge other that just tinkering and figuring stuff out. I just found out my bike is actually an XS400J and an 82 opposed to what the seller told me, which makes it a hell of a lot easier figure out what I'm doing. Was wondering if anyone has found out where I can find a manual online? I looked through the posted manuals on here and didn't see one for my bike specifically. I really only need it at this point to see a wiring diagram and to clean the carbs (which I've never done and scared shitless to mess up.) If there's any help that can be given I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jake

edit: This is how if found out what my bike actually is. This guy has the same bike that I do....well way nicer looking but the same.

As mentioned above, the closest available here is for the Seca. They are very similar.

The search box on the top right of every page is very powerful and you will find that most questions you will come up with have already been answered.

This thread is also a good place to start: http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10715

It would be good to make new thread for your bike where you can ask any new questions you have. It helps to keep things organized and makes it easier for others to help you.
Make sure to mention again in that new thread which model and year of bike you have. The DOHC/double over-head cam bikes are not as common as the SOHC machines and answers will be different with that in mind.

You can download the wring diagrams and service manual sections from links here

i can't remember how much info there was on cleaning the carbs in the manual BUT there is lots of topics on doing it since it is a common problem with these bikes so do some searching in the forums and site

I had to do mine 3 times and it got easier each time and was a good learning IMO not super hard and IMO If I had to it again, I would completely dis-assemble (lots of pictures and layout all the parts to make it easy to re-assemble) then get them ultrasonic cleaned.

I rarely come to this forum any more but during my restore of my 1982 XS400 that sat for 10 years, i got tons of valuable info here and as well as was able to lots of used parts at great prices. FYI there are still parts available through a Yamaha dealer but lots are discontinued.

If I can help, reply in this thread and I'll see it in my gmail
