Hi all, I changed the oil filter recently and noticed there was no pin which is usually found inside the hollow bolt which runs thru the centre of the oil filter and attaches the case to the engine...on my XS400 1978.

Is this pin essential?

Where can I can a replacement??

How can I make a replacement if I cant find one?

Saw a bolt for sale on Mikes XS site but no pin....
thanks

is this the pin that holds the pressure relief spring inside the bolt?
probably use a roll pin and cut to size, just make sure the spring is in there

Buy a new filter bolt. They are cheap and can be found all over the place.

My 360's filter bolt was missing the pin and everything that the pin holds in: the bypass mechanism.
Without the spring and plunger the filter is probably bypassed entirely so you'd just be circulating dirty oil through the engine.

Buy a new one like xchris says. Quick and easy.
Should be a few on eBay.

The bolt is easy ... expensive freight to Australia... but no pins?? Seems lots of bolts available but not pins...

It's just a roll pin. I have the bolt in front of me but don't have anything to tap it out with.
The hole looks to be approximately 2mm so a 2mm by 18mm roll pin might do it. You might be able to check the hole diameter better than I can, since yours is empty.
Roll pins are apparently sized based on the hole they go into.

The important part is whether you have the spring and ball bearing that are held in by the pin. Without them the pin is pointless, and so is the oil filter, and eventually the engine.

You might be able to source a properly sized ball bearing and spring. No way to know what psi the bypass will operate at if the ball and spring aren't OEM.
