I am trying to find an oil filter for my bike. I have called the bike shops local to me and they can't find anything that says 1984. It goes to 1983 then skips up. This is frustrating me to no end! Anyone can you tell me what theo il filter and air filter numbers are so I can tell the shop how to do their job looking into it? Please help!

There were XS400 DOHC (SECA 400) sold in 1984 (1983 production, titled 1984)..... this is not what you are referring to is it..... Big D-

1983 is the last year referred to in most information. You might want to figure out which specific model for future parts issues.
The oil filter is easy though as they're all the same: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-1L9-13441-11-00.html

This is my first post so not sure if I am replying properly.
Is this the same part number I may find at a local shop?
I need an air filter too. I can't believe the shop can't figure these out themselves. They don't have a 1984 listed in any of the books and so many places don't have the parts cause they don't know the numbers.
On this link there is no year make or model, how do you know this is the one? I am just trying to learn, not really questioning your knowledge as I clearly need help.

Yes I do believe it says seca on the bike, but the ownership doesn't say that do I didn't realize it was a model, I thought maxim is the model? It is showing as a 1984 but the manufacture date says 12/83

Is there anywhere on this site that shows how to do an oil change? Where exactly is the plug? Yes I know that sounds bad. I have to have a better look at it. I watched a video a newer one but the oil filter and plug are not in the same spots. I see the filter section, but have to crawl under it more in the daylight to see the plug.
I think there may be gas it the oil as I think and hope it was only the float that stuck open. But I was told to change the oil and filters before riding it again.

The Seca and Maxim are two different but similar models.
There's a manual for the Seca on the forum. If you do have a Seca, great, if it's a Maxim I believe the oil change procedure should be the same.

OEM air filters are still available directly from Yamaha for my 1976 XS360, I'd think the OEM filters should still be available for your bike through any dealer. They should also be able to order aftermarket filters. I believe HiFlo makes some. They also make aftermarket oil filters.

If the 84 model really is just a 1983 production year bike you should be ok telling the dealer to order 1983 parts if that's what they have in their computer.

Ok sorry confused for a minute it is a Maxim not Seca. The shop early told me they were the same and I said no he said yes. So thank you for clarify they are similar but not the same.

Can you explain, I went to partzilla site and entered in the info, I don't see where you go this link from up above. I see they have I think 13 different links at that year and model but I can't see how you chose this one over the fram or the hiflo one which have different numbers are they actually all the same filters?

I finally got a message from the shop saying it is a canon 144, Canadian tire says it is a ch6003 fram ... lol I'm a bit confused.

And any idea the air filter, the shop has no clue.

The motors in the SECA and Maxim are the same as well as many other components.... I should have noted the Maxim was also produced in '84, but I own SECA(s), so I didn't think about it..... sorry.... the dealer should have listings for 1984.... the SECA is a XS400R and the Maxim is a XS400J. Also, sometimes dealers confuse the XS400 with the XJ400 which is a 4-cylinder.

I don't know what page you're looking at. The link I pasted above is for the OEM part #. I got to it through the bike's parts diagram: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1983/XS400K/parts.html
For some reason the images on partzilla aren't working for me. CMSNL also works:

Took me a moment for the "Canon" one. I googled those and both the K&N 144 and Fram CH6003 are apparently compatible with the 83 Maxim.

I'm pretty sure HiFlo does make a filter for the Maxim but their online catalogue lists it as taking the same filter as my XS360C, which is incorrect.

I have a new air filter if you want it. I have no use for it. I'd also suggest giving your shop a break. They are obviously out of their element. As most are when dealing with vintage bikes.

The oil filter is a K&N kn-144, or a Highflow HF-144.

If you post a pic or 2 of your bike, it will help us identify it, and possibly any modifications to it.

My Maxim was registered in Ont. as an '84 too, but no difference from '82-84 that I've ever seen.
Maxim and Seca have the same engine but different transmissions (5 spd/6 spd) and different sprocket sizes. Wheel sizes are different too - but oil change procedure is the same.

Drain bolt shoots the oil forward http://www.xs400.com/threads/tell-on-yourself-thread.8550/page-12#post-153773
Filter cover is on the very bottom, parallel to the ground - a bit awkward, and, if you a bit dyslexic like me, you need to be careful you are not tightening when you think you are loosening.

Speaking of tightening, be VERY careful NOT to overtighten the filter cover. It calls for 11 ft.lbs (which is "wrist-tight") and it is easy to over torque and crack the aluminum cover. Here's my sad story: http://www.xs400.com/threads/cracked-oil-filter-cover-j-b-weld-or-replace.8626/

Best of luck!

Hoping to finally get to do my oil this weekend and am not sure where the oil plug is? I can't find a photo at all or any instruction anywhere. I know where the oil filter casing is and there is a bolt right near it with a screw in the centre of the bolt .. is this it?

Lol, sorry ... I see now how I would have canon and k&n confused lol. Thank you.
