Hello everyone!

I hope this post finds you well. I have an 81 XS400 and I've run into an issue. Yesterday I had my carbs synced and the bike was running beautifully. Today I go out to turn her on and she starts right up but no matter how I use the choke, it will no longer idle. I even took it for a spin and she wouldn't get above 20mph in any gear and I had to keep the throttle open just to avoid it dying. I'm just looking for suggestions and advice to maybe troubleshoot the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

I know it seems almost stupid but check your fuel that you've got plenty in your tank and that your petcock is operating properly. Also check that your vacuum line is attached properly. I've missed that line a few times. Then on to your battery make sure it is FULLY charged again on mine it seems like the state of charge has a big effect on how it runs.

It's definitely not the battery. I just put a new one in a few days ago and rebuilt the fuse box. She starts right up. I'll take a look at the vacuum line. We had to remove the tank to sync the carbs. I suppose it's possible something got messed up. I'm learning all of this as I go so I have no idea how to check the petcock or vacuum line thought. Thank you for your responses!

Yeah, vacuum. Had that before. Also, is the cap still on the other boot? I actually have the same issue at the moment. I changed my carbs to another set I had cleaned up so I could use a new set of rubber boots which didn't fit my old carbs but now I have idle problems. Gonna play with the mixture screws and check with a bench sync today. A bit of popping from it which suggests it might be running lean.
