Hi all,
This is my first post. I rode for 25 years but have been away from it for 15 years.

I got an 84 Maxim 400 and have a couple of questions. Please pardon my ignorance at this point. When checking the oil in the window should the oil completely cover the window? I think there is some writing next to the window but I'm not able to read it even after cleaning.

Is it normal for the headlight to come on with the key even though the headlight switch is in the "off" position?

Although the bike had been parked for quite a while I did get it started with a new battery and some messing around with the carbs. Most immediate problem right now is that the front brake is dragging. I think taking that apart will be the next job.

thanks,
Sandy

No. There is normally a line or two next to the window; I've never seen a motorcycle that required the window to be totally covered. Are you placing the motorcycle on the center stand to check?

Normal. Most, if not all, motorcycles do not allow the head light to ever be turned off from the factory. The switch is misleading.

Thanks BC. I'm going to do some more cleaning around the window and see if I can find the marks. I'm busy right now removing some ugly hard bags and forward highway pegs as well as the remains of mounts for a windshield.
thanks,
Sandy

Sandy,

I know this was 3 years ago now, but did you end up using the window?

I have way too much oil in my bike for some reason and it is above the window. Wondering if draining some oil until it reaches the top of the window will help my oil leak issues. (Oil is dripping from over flow tube).
