Hi All,
New member here, but this forum has helped me tremendously since I got my 1982 xs400 two years ago. My name is Keith and I'm posting from Whitefish, Montana. I finally began to customize and have run into a dead end trying to get it running right.

With everything stock, the bike has ran great since I bought it. This spring, it died on me while I was riding and I noticed that there was gas in the crankcase and it was leaking out of the airbox. Hoping it was just a stuck float, I decided that when I pulled the carbs off I would finally switch to pod filters, rejet, strip off some chrome, and wrap the exhaust.

I cleaned the carbs and put in size 130 main jets and 45 pilot jets (stock mains were 125/115, and pilot was 42.5). I made sure my plastic floats were at a height of 22mm. And yes, I put fresh oil and oil filter in. Hoping this would put me in the right place to sync the carbs and adjust the throttle stop, I started the bike up. It ran for a minute, but rpm's didn't climb as high as they did on the stock setup as it warmed up. As I closed the choke, the rpm's dropped so low the bike died. I tried to adjust the throttle stop to fix the idle, but no luck. It won't even start when it's warm, and only runs a few minutes when I start it cold. I'm at a loss for what to do now as I don't think I have an air leak in the carb boots, but I can check that if someone can explain the WD40 test to me? Any other ideas?? Please help!

Thanks for the tip @Drewcifer. I'll research, but do you happen to have a link to a good thread or video on checking valves?

And here's some photos:
