Hi All,

Ive been using this forum for the last few months now to try and get a 1978 400 E on the road, initially i had two bikes, 1 1978 and 1 1982. Not entirely sure of the model.

My main issue is the charging circuit, i have gone through the rebuild for the stator and confirmed the resistance at 0.8 as my multi meter only goes so far, for all 3 phases from the coils, as well as the field coil is now ~4.5 ohm. So i think i can rule that out, as for the regulator and rectifier, i have just installed a new one for the bike. I tested the resistance along the way after soldering so i am pretty sure that side is good.

What i see happening is no voltage modulation, simply generating enough power to stay running but not fluctuating up and down or even close to 14.5 v. I have a lithium ion battery for the bike, and all led lights, so im thinking the battery has to be my problem.

I can't imagine anything else to test, so im grasping at straws if anyone else has had a similiar problem?Any help is much appreciated.

There's a test procedure in the Haynes manual that involves removing the + wire from the battery while the bike is running and checking the generated voltage at a certain rpm.
It'd confirm whether it's the battery or the system.

Your resistance readings look good.

Which regulator and/or rectifier did you install?

@BBS360 Thanks for the info, I will give that test a try.

@drewpy Thats were my thoughts were going, i read somewhere on here someone else experienced limiting voltage due to a battery as well so i will give that a shot with a new lead acid this time.

Thanks for the help.
