1981 XS400 Scramblerized Build, eventually...

OK, so I need side covers since my wiring doesn't look so great. I did them in aluminum, but can't decide if I should go black or yellow.

What do you think looks best?

Well, I decided on yellow, and am glad I did. I did some finish powder coating, then I assembled everything, tightened all the bolts and STARTED IT! It started right up and ran pretty good. No off noises, no smoke, just a clean running motor. I adjusted the idle and it idled smoothly. Until I put the filters on, then it wouldn't idle. Obviously I need new filters that actually flow air. Yeah, I know, I was warned. New filters on the way.

I still need to add the mirrors, adjust the handlebars and install the grips. I should be able to take a short ride tomorrow.

Here is a video compilation of the build with a short running video at the end. It still needs the carbs set and I think timing. Lots of decel popping.

Also added the heat shields today before a short 4 mile test ride. I would burn my leg if I didn't.

Needs some chrome acorn nuts.

FINALLY got some time to remove the carbs, thoroughly clean them rejet them and replaces all the parts. With some adjusting, the bike is running much better. I also discovered I had the exhaust pipes loose and not sealing on the head.

I also replaced the decals that were messed up, and added the XS400 decals.

Now just a couple minor details like registering it, and away we go.
