Offroadjeepins xs400 café/brat build

Wow well its been a little over a year since my last post. Bike has been on the back burner but got it back up front. Ordered the exhaust parts. Muffler is one of the duels from a CRF250. 1.25" main tubes to 1.25" merge pipe to 1.38" This is my first time working with mandrel bends. Its not very hard to work with. Tubes are a hair off but looks good to me. It will be getting wrap. I turned the head transitions on the lathe. will be fully TIG welded. Rear section also changed since the lasttime i posted. Kinda shortened it up and changed the deseign, using factory fender as the lower section and using 18ga. sheet to fill the top. Keep in mind that the piece is big still. It will be trimed down to fit back of seat pan.

Interested to see how you finish the exhaust. One of my plans on my wife bike is to build a 2-1 to replace the current exhaust that's too loud and annoying.

Lookin good. Have to ask though. Will you be able to change the oil filter without removing the exhaust?

Could relocate it and convert to a spin-off filter. Not sure what it'd do for the looks.

I'm okay with pulling the exhaust off. Shouldn't be to bad. The exhaust is pretty short. I'll be wrenchin on it tomorrow going to see about getting the filter off.

Update. Exhaust is done minus final welding. Came out awesome. I can even get the oil filter out which is a plus! On to getting the rear shocks mounted up. also built a work platform need to figure out a way to keep the bike up there though.

Without use of the center stand you will never get an accurate oil reading on the bike.

Going to build a set of jacks similar to this. It will have extension long enough so exhaust will clear the jack. I need a set for use with the work table and will work great for checking and changing oil.

As long as the motor/bike is at it's stock center stands height it should work fine.

I don't really see how this is a big issue. What about all the guys that raise there forks in the triple clamps. It lowers the front of the bike. The bike then tilts forward. Using stock center stand would give false reading? Every motor cross bike has a sight glass, they do not have center stands. You simply hold bike straight up and look. Im pretty sure I'm capable of checking my oil if i can build a bike from scratch.... Sorry not trying to be a dick just seems odd your worried about a oil level sight glass that was put there by yamaha to not have issues with people that can't properly maintain their bike......

I don't care what you do and yes those other guys with lowered fronts would have inaccurate oil readings. I am just stating that if you want to have a correct oil level in the bike as the engineers at yamaha intended this is what you need to do. As for the motocross bikes those where meant to have the oil checked that way ours are not. I prefer to run a motor with the right level in it. A lot of " custom" bike builders don't care so much. They care more for a "look" than function. Because if they cared more about function, they would leave the bike stock.

I appreciate your concern about my oil level. If you didnt care what I did you would assume I can check my oil level and have moved on. I've been posting and using this form to share my build as I feel its something different and is very hands on with hand fabricated parts.

Since I've been challenged on my every move on this build. I will not continue to share my build. Thanks its been fun.

I made a point of this because others that may read this thread may not know enough to think about it and have it cause issues down the road. I have seen people on this forum with oil/motor issues just because improper oil levels. Don't stop posting because of me. There are people that see what you are doing and may learn something.

Intrigued to see where the build ends up. Cool custom 2-1 exhaust for sure.
Keep posting. Chris is just being thorough.
