Some jetting advice

Wow i just noticed that two of the screws, one on each carb boot, has fallen out.. i think thatll create a leak!! Lol. I tightened them good too but not over tight as to warp the flanges..

That it may ;)

I had brand new ones that I purchased for my big bike and well they leaked even........had to make thicker gaskets for them. So once you get the boltds back in spray a little starting fluid around them to make sure they are not leaking. That's how I found out on mine as I was checking for leaks when syncing the carbs.

Raised the needle and set the idle screws 3.5 turns. Runs worse than before. Going back to original needle height with 135 mains and 3 turns on idle screws.

I cannot figure out a way to route the throttle cable without it messing with the idle!!! Driving me crazy

With the type of bars your running you would have to have a custom cable made to fit. Your type of mufflers will make for a lot of carbs issues. You may just have to live with how it runs or get a better set.

I ended up finding a spot to thread the throttle cable where it can work without tugging the carb!

I was running the 140 mains and put the needle down one notch to richen the midrange. Soggy midrange with increased stumbling on full throttle. Ran like doodoo.

I put in the 135 mains and set the neelde one notch up from stock to lean it out a bit. The bike pulls much much better now but theres still a slight hesitation at the high end. Im gonna order 130s and 132.5 jets and put the needle back to stock and go from there.

I started the needle one notch up with the 135s because i remember getting the hesitation as it was at the stock position when i first got it running.

Im a little baffled here as to how my jetting process has been working out... the exhaust i have now is certainly more free flowing than the stock and im using oem filters. It was jetted with 135s stock so i was positive id have to upjet at least one step. Now im finding that i need to go down on the jets even with the exhaust..

I was under the impression that our bikes of the 70s were jetted lean from the factory for EPA regs. Im finding that i needed to go leaner on the pilot and possibly the main depending on how it runs with the 132.5 or 130..

I know the 400s had various jetting and my bike is a 360 so it shouldnt need to be as jetted as the 400..

Any ideas.?

The xs360 carbs run much richer than the xs400 ones do. They are a different style/design than what the 400 used.

OK I think Ive got the jetting down.

I put in the 132.5 mains, needles in middle position. It ran smoothly right to redline with no hesitations or ill symptoms. By far the best its ever run and I could take it to redline on full throttle from 5k pulling the whole way.

I also have 130 mains, but I think Im best with the 132.5s. The bike was running OK with the 135s but there was a minor stutter from 7.5k+ on full throttle.

Weather seems to be holding out around here for the most part. Leaves are starting to change and temps are pretty good even at 11pm when Im heading to work.. Ill be on the hunt for good photo opportunities. I think the fall weather and with the leaves changing, will be a nice backdrop for my bright orange and maroon and yellow gas tank lol.

Ok im still running the 132.5 mains with the needle in middle position. If im rolling in 4th at around 5k, if i go full throttle ill be fine all the way to redline going in 5th and 6th.

If im in 1st or 2nd and i go full throttle from a slightly lower rpm, say 3k, i get stumbles and hesitation. Im not bangung it to full, im giving it a steady roll as the rpms rise.

Im thinking that i should be dropping the float level now? This is the same hesitation i experienced with the larger jets except it feels worse when youre at a lower rpm.

I may give the 130s a try. Im a little nervous because i checked the plugs and they are looking pretty clean. They have a very very slight tinge on the insulator and the strap was a very slight grey/black almost ashy color but not like a flaky ash. Ill get a pic when its bright out.

Other than that, its a blast to ride and im getting a lot of compliments on it which feels nice lol. If they only saw what i went through went through this thing... A lot of people ask me what year it is.

So a bit of an update on the jetting journey. I installed the 127.5s and gave them a shot. Rode to work once and around town a few times. Bike ran fine and gave no ill symptoms until after I was riding at highway speeds for a few miles. I couldnt get it past 70mph. Id slow down and get into 4th and run out 4th,5th,6th gear. Between 4th and 6th Id only have like a 5mph difference it just wouldnt pick up. Lost all usable power.

Looked at the plugs and they were slightly white. Mid range was fine but the top end had nothing when it got warmed up..

Checked valves, timing, rejetted, adjusted idle screws, synced...

So I put 132.5s in and lowered the needle one notch. Bike has more midrange and screams on the top end. Only street tested but I have some nice lonely curvy back roads where I can bring it up to around 60 and back down to 2nd gear speeds and really move around the rpm range in a couple gears.
