I did a bit of searching and found quite nothing. I would like to have rear spokes on R18 rim and XS 400/360 hubs are becoming quite rare (=pricey) here in europe. To have more oportunities and wider range of choosing i wondered whether those hubs are interchangable with other models produced around 70'.
I have collected some part numbers here (mainly taken from boats.net):

It is said that first three numbers are model marking, but as i look for example on RD250, many of those first 3-digits are from different model than RD.
Next five numbers are the part itself (eg 25311 = rear hub). W means factory assembled kit which differs in content from the original assembly used in production.
Other numbers are quite irrelevant for us.

The question is:
Is that model number tightly connected to the part number or the part number is unique, therefore the part is identical as on other models?

I believe the first three are the model that the part was first used on.
For example the '76 XS360 was the first of the XS400 series so many parts continued to be used on later XS400s but kept the 360's 1L9 prefix.

If that exact part gets used again on a new model of bike they'll keep the original model prefix, which is why some parts on the RDs will have three digit prefixes of other models, usually earlier from years.

To guarantee compatibility the full part #s need to match exactly, 3 digit prefix and five digits following.
Sometimes parts will still be compatible even with different prefixes. The XS400 center stand was updated and reinforced over the years, getting new 3-digit prefixes, but the mounts stayed the same so I was able to fit a later model center stand to my xs360.
Fortunately a member on here was able to compare measurements before I ordered.

I don't mean to say that a rear wheel swap is impossible. Mix, match, and fabricate what doesn't fit.

the RD boys have dried up the supply of xs250 spoked wheels as they fit their bikes too
Hi I know this is an old thread but I had same problem with finding a spoked/drum rear wheel for my xs400 so I got an old Suzuki dr 600 rear wheel had it re spoked and pulled over by about 6mm made up my own brake rod and torque bar with some stainless I found in the skip.... works fine...spoked /drum rear or even fronts are getting hard to find in uk/Europe.the americans have got em all. all the best Higgy uk

I ended up with rear honda CB cj/g/f wheel. Front is RD 350, it was needed to alter the fork (different axle diameter)

73 and 74 RD350 wheels are the same part number as the wheels from the 77 Xs400.
Maybe my seller didnt know the year or so, but my front is claimed to be 73 RD350 and has different axle diameter (17mm). So I advise others to check the axle diameter with the seller if planning a "direct swap".

I haven't checked the front wheels and corresponding numbers as I have a spoked front wheel that is 18", I wanted an 18" rear wheel and the part numbers are identical.
