Hope you guys can help me out. I need some help identifying the year of what I believe to be a XS400 engine. This engine is actually being used to power something else so I do not have an original VIN number or head stamp to go off of. What I do have is the number stamped into the top of the motor. I need to find a new starter for this engine, as well as a carb rebuild kit probably. It sat for a long time, with gas in it obviously, and everything in the carbs is gummed up pretty good. This engine has very few miles on it so I think it's worth fixing. It was turning over good, but then just stopped. When I took the starter off tonight there were broken wires in the armature that actually managed to get stuck between it and the magnets in the case. I am guessing it's toast and can not be fixed due to the broken wires.
The casting # on the motor is 14v-004068

I was going to link to the History thread but it's an 82 XS400SJ, single overhead cam motor.

What's it powering?

I hope you have the TCI module.

Thanks for the info. The research I was doing is what was confusing me. I kept seeing 82 as the change to DOHC and I was 99% sure this engine was a SOHC. But then kept seeing info that the 14v was for 82 lol.

What is a TCI module and why is that significant?

Here is a pic of what it's powering. They were called a Pulse Autocycle. They were sold in the early 80's. My parents had a motorcycle shop in Denver CO and had 6 of them to sell. The one this motor is in was my grandfather's. I have another one i am converting to electric power. They were notorious for overheating and toasting the little air cooled 400 engine.

They made both types that year. It can make parts ordering confusing. Anything listed for 82 XS400s is probably only compatible with double-overhead cam models.

Looks like a cool vehicle.
The TCI is the ignition module. A black box.

Good to know, yes the ignition module etc is all there. It was running just fine when parked, it just sat for many, many many years. I have noticed most things listed as parts for 82 are DOHC parts, it certainly makes it very confusing but I am catching on I think. And to top it off I pulled the carbs off the other night to disassemble and clean, and it had brass floats. Which from what I have seen it probably should have had plastic floats? The carbs do have the press in style float needle valve assemblies and not the screw in, so I have no idea just more confusion I guess. LOL

The starter is toast, broken wires in the winding so I am locating one of those. Then it appears I have to remove the side case to get the gear back on the starter, which I wasn't aware of until I pulled the starter. Seems like an odd way to do things, I would have thought the gear could have been "self supporting" so you could pull the starter and put it back without having to take the case off. Wouldn't be as big a deal if I didn't have to pull the entire motor out of the vehicle, I can't get the case off with it mounted as there is framework and other stuff in the way. Something that seems it should be fairly simple always has to turn into an ordeal it seems.

When looking for parts go with 81 xs400 stuff. It's the same as your 82 sohc xs400 but without any 82 dohc xs400 confusion. Cool thing you have there. If you get it going you should post a video of it going.

Good to know, and thanks for the info. If I get it going I will try to remember to post something up.
