I am starting a renew/restore on a recently purchase 1978 2e and the exhaust is not correct. I have seen what Mike XS has to offer in a "commando style" and also another eBay sellers reverse cone mufflers. Has anyone had any experience with either? I am attempting to find something reasonably close to factory appearance. Any suggestions?

The ebay seller was touting "Dunstall style"

I would avoid "straight through" type mufflers. You will not find an aftermarket that will work the same as stock. Try to find ones that have close to the same length as stock with the same size outlet hole.

I will try. I know they are different appearnce-wise,but, will later year exhaust work for these bikes?

Any sohc xs400 exhausts will work. I like the 80-82 sohc ones best. Don't buy mufflers for "looks", you can use the later 80-82 systems on the earlier bikes also.

I wasn't going for look other trying to capture the original look of the bike. This one will stay as stock as it is possible to do. I am currently doing a repair to the rear seat section. I bought a nice 78 400 2e from a fellow NYer here. I think it will clean up nicely and be a daily driver. Its only downside is it is a kick only bike...and we know all about kick start issues for me!;)

Today I tried my hand at upholstery. I had some "pleather" that was laying around and 3 different seat/tailsections. I scavenged the best parts from the 3 and came up with this. Not original , but a good working substitute.

Dimecity has some decent mufflers that will give you the length and slight appearance of a stock setup.

I have 15" tapered mufflers on mine and they sound pretty decent. They are louder than stock and give a nice deep tone when im coasting.I will try to upload a sound clip when I get the chance.

These mufflers arent straight through either, they have a directional piece inside that directs exhaust though the baffle.

Thanks Mike, I will take a look!
