I don't have a front brake cable for my '81. As some of you probably know they don't make them anymore and aren't easy to come by. So what do you guys use? Make your own? It has the same little mushroom end like the clutch cable not a barrel end, can I cut down a clutch cable and use that?

Not sure if @Petew has one maybe? I shipped him a front brake housing and left the cables on it.......maybe he has an extra ?

I will take a look but I think the one I have is very short and would have to be with flat bars or clip ons. let me look tomorrow

I appreciate it, I'm running 12" apes though so I doubt it would work, the stock cables just barely do.

No, sadly it barely fit with dirt track bars so it would not, sorry. I have longer clutch and throttle cables but the set had brake hose, not brake cable. Good luck with your hunting!

...and yes you could use a cut-down clutch cable with the right end on it.

Check out this link:

This is the kit I used to make the front brake cable that is on Petew's 1978 which I sold him a while back.

If that kit is not long enough for your application contact them and they can get you what ever you need.

Making it up was not hard and only required soldering one end on once length was determined.

Also for my write up on making the cable do a search in the forum for:

Was looking for front brake cable for 1978 XS400-2E

Found a front brake cable on ebay listed as a clutch cable, 14$ shipped! There's another one with the lever and perch for about 30$ if anyone else is looking right now

I was wondering if a clutch would work as they made a few lengths over the years. I know I have 2 different lengths of clutch cables in my stash.

The clutch cable has the right end but you'd still have to cut of the bar end to feed through the adjuster on the drum. I think i got lucky with this "clutch" cable lol

Haha, the saga continues...after verifying with the seller that the cable in the pic would be the cable i received, that "clutch" cable came as a clutch cable with melted sheath. I ordered the other one with the perch, showed up today and the cable is frozen soaB... I've got the cable hanging with a bottle of oil hoping to loosen things up but I may be looking into that venhillusa universal cable

How long of a cable are you after ? I have a few lying around and they all work........
