Hey all. New member here. Search through a bunch of threads trying to identify my new toy to no avail.

It is a 1982 XS 400 Heritage Special and my question is which sub letter should I be looking for when ordering parts? S? SJ? none?

Previous owner has removed front brake pads as they were "seized" so I had ordered a set brake pads without having a set to compare it to, and they were not correct.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Here in the u.s. it's a sj. Post some pics of what you have. It will help.

Ill check the VIN when I get back home on Wednesday. I can take a better picture at that time too if needed.

It looks like the bars have been changed and maybe the pipes as well?

Aftermarket pipes and shorter handlebars.
Looks like one of the oddball Canadian SJ models like mine.
The VIN will be 14W-###### instead of the usual 14V-###### for an SJ.
Styling of a 1982 XS400SJ but front disk brakes off a 1981 SG instead of the typical SJ drum brakes.

Your safest bet will be to buy parts for the 1981 XS400SG. The only real difference is that some of the stock '82/SJ parts are black.
Also avoids accidentally buy parts for the double-overhead cam 1982 XS400 which are incompatible. Sellers will often list DOHC parts as for "1982 XS400" even though they are incompatible with your 1982 XS400.

Xs650direct is the Canadian version of MikesXS. Mikes lists the model compatibility so browse on there then find the part #s on xs650direct.
Parts'n'more is Canadian too.
Disaster Motors is out of Vancouver. They sell through eBay and usually have gasket kits and some piston rings.
FortNine of course for generic stuff and tires.

For non-Canadian sources:
eBay
Yambits is UK based but has some good items. Got a new brake caliper piston from them and some reproduction rubber bits.
SiriusConInc in the US has some good stuff too.

I use Partzilla as well. At least there, I can get part numbers and look at diagrams and search parts on Ebay or something.

Partzilla also sells on EBay and sometimes they charge slightly more there. The pushrod seals I just bought were about $0.35 more than what they have listed on their site, but theres other users selling the same part for a few dollars more. Sometimes its just easier for me to click on "buy" with EBay because I have my Paypal already linked up and I don't have to think about signing in and passwords and all that crap.. Yes, I can be very lazy sometimes and I will take the easiest route even if its only one click less..

Bars yes. Looks like a mac 2-1 exhaust. It also looks like your missing air boxes on the bike. Good idea to get that fixed before running it.

Thanks for the responses. The clutch cable is routed correctly but incredibly hard for my wife (and even me) to pull. Pivot moving ok so I ordered a new cable from Partzilla.

Air boxes are back on now. Just had them off for the initial fire up when we first got the bike and took it for a quick test ride. Missing front brake pads in this picture as well.

Make sure your air filters are in good shape. Over time they tend to degrade and fall apart. The stock bars are a lot different than what you have. I would think that is what is causing cable binding. If you order another stock size cable you will have the same issue. I would remove the old one first and see if it moves freely.

Don't build for looks. Build for function. If the bike runs well with the stock boxes keep them. They are the best setup overall for these bikes.

Awesome. Thanks so much for all of the help. Would those Mac pipes have any effect on Jetting?

It may have already been setup for them. Check to see how the plugs look and how it rides. I would make sure you give the bike a full service before doing much with it. There are threads on this in the forum. Also google plug chops as that will help you to read your plugs.

Alright will do.

When we got the bike it wasn't running but were told it ran so we were able to get a really good deal. We took the carbs off and gave them a really good cleaning, changed the oil and filter, added some fresh gas and fuel filter. The intake-carb adapters were cracked so we installed a new set of those with new gaskets and also changed the plugs. Even after the battery charge I still couldn't get the electric start to kick in. After disassembling the right hand controls I found the button to be pushed in too far and not making contact. Re-adjusted the tension spring and retaining plate and the bike fired right up.

We are going to put the bike on the road in the spring so for right now we have just been cleaning up and detailing the little bits while getting used to where everything is. A plug chop is going to be first on the list of things to do in the spring after some new gas and oil as well.

This site has been a huge help, I really appreciate all the feedback and support.
