1976 XS400 - New to me, new to motorcycles...

I would not worry about the parts on it as the bike has had a lot of " mods" done to it. Kind of ruins the rare part of the bike.

Thank you!

How easy would it be to strip the bike down and have the frame powder-coated? The more I look at the bike the more it needs little things. I’ll take pictures of the things I’ve found.

Its real easy there is not much to these bikes.........the wiring harness is pretty simple to just take care when pulling it out.

I powder coated my last build and was easy to do.......

I'm just new to all kinds of motorcycle mechanics. I don't know much about the wiring and when I open it up it gives me a bit of anxiety!

This is how I got it, I just want it to run nicely. I think the starter is shot or it has major electrical problems.

I'm having issues with the starter! Every time I want to turn it on, I have to jump it with a car!

If you can use the electric starter when it is jumped then thats not a starter issue. You may have issues with the charging system on the bike or you might need a new battery.. Check the voltage level of the battery if you have a voltmeter. If you dont have one buy a good multimeter. You are going to need it to track down the electrical gremlins of the bike. Throw the battery on the charger if you have one to see if you can revive it. You could also probably pull the battery and take it to an auto parts store and have them test it. But for then to test it it would need to have a good charge. If I were you I would get a battery tender.

I have this and it seems to work for me. But the battery tender unit above is very highly rated

Search the forum or ask if you have some other question .about how to check the battery.

Make sure you have a 12ah battery or close to that. Make sure it is fully charged. If the e-start button is not working it may be because of the handle bars being painted as the button grounds to them and the signal switch is the other part of the ground. At least that's what happens on a stock bike. Yours is far from that so you will have lots of wiring/electrical issues I would think.

My XS360 is a low number as well. I thinks its 1L9000323 or something like that. The transmission recently gave up on me and ruined the engine case.. I was not happy about it since the engine matched the frame...

Check voltage with the bike running and with it off. You have a mechanical voltage regulator from the factory. These are not known to be reliable and cause most of the charging issues on the 360s.. Batteries dont seem to last too long either. The mechanical regulators are adjustable but they are not precise at all. Even if your regulator is OK, Id still replace it with a solid state one.

As XSChris said, the hand controls are somewhat sensitive too. I had to take mine apart and clean them before all the buttons started working. Theres very small spring loaded parts in these so be careful if you take them down.

It is not hard. Just keep components tagged. Take loads of pictures. Take your time...
Buy/copy shop manual, ask questions...

So I think I have a 1977 xs360 2-D model on my hands. I know I started this thread 2.4 years ago but I am just now getting around to putting hands on it. I've started taking a few things off now, just exterior and following the Reighmoto Garage guys post on YouTube. Where could I find the shop manual?
