Hi All,
New member and just restoring a '78 XS400, so learning a ton about the bike. I took the fuel tank off and I see two cylinders clamped to the frame right under the tank. Can y'all tell me what they are? I can research diagnosing etc. but I don't read wiring diagrams very well and I can't find out what they are...

Thanks!

Also, I will, no doubt have tons of rookie questions moving forward, but I promise I'll dig for answers before I bother asking anyone.
Thanks!

Ignition coils. Get or down load the manual. Post some pics of the bike so we can see what you have. Welcome!

Thanks! Actually, the bike isn't mine... I'm starting a kind of motorcycle "maker space..." I provide the tools, the know-how (mine or others) and help other people get their bikes customized or on the road or whatever. It's basically hanging out, turning wrenches, and drinking beverages.

The woman who bought the bike from me is probably joining the forum soon, since she wants to get her hands dirty and learn. She's cool and I want her to have the pleasure of posting pics and talking about the bike.

Basically, it's a '78 xs400.

We started dismantling it the other night.

Crankcases full of gas/oil, rust everywhere, but the bones are solid. First thing is getting a kick lever so I can turn the engine over. Psyched to get this thing going though!

We'll be re-building carbs, brakes, and damn near everything that can be re-built.

Good to hear your helping out. And hopefully the rear master is ok............those things are like gold if they are in working condition........

I may have the lever if you are in need of one ?

Hey! We do need one, thanks. Also, the weird coupling link at the bottom of the lever, if you have it. Let me know what you want for it.

Right now I just want to hear this thing running!

Coupling link? Are you saying where it mounts to the motor? Its all one piece as far as I know. I will dig through the parts bin and let you know.

The kickstart lever comes complete. I found one on ebay for a Kawasaki that fit perfectly. KZ440 i think.

The two parts where offered separate from yamaha. The lower part is called the boss I do believe. I have a few complete levers if you need one.

Xchris, definitely. What do you want for them? Spectra might have one also... don't want to create bad feeling...
