I have my eyes on the Emgo reverse cone 17" mufflers(black). Anyone have any experience with those on an XS400 bike? Reviews I have read some say they are loud which I really don't want to loud of an exhaust. Is there a way to quiet them down some? Are they really that loud on an XS? My idea is to use the stock header pipes and wrap them then attach a pair of those Emgo's on. Trying to keep cost down some just don't want an obnoxiously loud bike. I'm sure I'll have to re-jet the carb again but that's ok as I have a local shop that has the jets in stock. Any input would be great. Thanks again guys for all your knowledge on this sight.

If you have stock 80-82 sohc exhaust I would NOT cut them up. Use a set of headers off a 77-79 or 76-77 xs360 those had removable mufflers and where designed for slip on types. Most emgo's are cheap junk and will sound very load even for the 400. Most aftermarket mufflers will overall de-tune your bike compared to stock setups. Intake filters/pods also. If your are in good shape keep them and look for a cheap set to mess with. You may want to put the factory ones back on after a while on when you sell it. Good stock ones are getting hard to find.

Right side isn't much to look at any more but I do agree if they were in better shape I would either take them off and save them or just keep them on the bike. Thanks for the input xschris, I do value your input. From reading on this forum I see you have a lot of knowledge on these bikes. I will look at other alternatives like you said. I'm gonna start looking for the header pipes you suggested and better slip on mufflers.
