Hi to all. This is my first post. I bought a 1980 XS400 which was sitting for 4 years in a garage. I bought new carbs, battery and a new tank. She fired up with the kick just fine given that the starter is not working. After this first start she is getting harder and harder to get started. I was trying to kickstart her and suddenly it completely died. I turn the ignition on but nothing happens. No horn and no idiot lights come on. Checked all fuses and they seem ok. Battery is new and is fully charged. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Hi guys I do have the Haynes manual but I didn't find anything related to this. Anyway I started moving cables around and found that there was a bad connection in the fuse holder. Took all cables and solder them back and the bike is alive again! But I really appreciate your responses. Now the only problem is that the electrical starter is spinning but not engaging. I took the cover out and found that the starter sprocket and chain had fallen in the crankcase. Put it back and the starter still does not engage with the engine. It keeps spinning but does not move the engine. What I should be looking at?

Welcome from Georgia. Good luck with your bike. Let's see some pictures.

Your going to have lots of issues with that intake setup and carb. Do you still have the stock setup? I would hold on to it if you do. Search 2-1 intake for sohc xs400.

So far has been good. I’m rebuilding one of the original carbs so I will try it once it’s done. Only thing missing is a diaphragm. I’ve read about the 2-1 conversions and there is a lot of different results. One of the two original carbs is damaged beyond repair. I know that I could get more out of the current carb if I start messing with jets but right now is running exactly how I wanted. Wish me luck.
