I'm trying to make the tires the same height

I know the front is 18 and the rear 16

I was going to do 4.0 -18 in front

And 4.5-16 in the rear

Would that work?

With a 4.00x18 on the front the tire will stand about 26 inches tall. A 4.50 x 16 will stand about 25 inches tall. A 5.00 x 16 will stand about 26 inches tall.

Thanks Leo, you're about to be a Guru on Both websites!

Let me ask you this ; would there be any adverse effects from putting a 5.0 tire on a 16 inch rim, that does seem awfully tall.

With tires that fat fitment on the bike and rims would be an issue not to mention the very poor handling. Does your bike have mag or spoke wheels? Post some pics of the bike.

This is the one I have at the moment

It's the side to side that will be the issues. Front tires can go 120/90-18( I think, maybe 110 as the mag wheel is a bit wider than the spoke type. 1.60-1.85) without the fender on and 130/90-16 without the rear chain guard on. Any bigger and the rear tire will hit the chain and the front tire will hit the forks. Why "same size" tires?

The look. I got a stock 400. I picked this one up for 200 bucks in rough shape so I figured I'd have some fun with it. I'm sure raked out front ends and hard tails aren't good for handling either, but it sure looks cool.

What if I take off the chain guard. Would there be an issue then?

130 is as large as the back can take. Any larger and the tire will hit the chain. Keep in mind these size rims should only have so big of tires on them. You can risk side flexing of the tire and maybe breaking the bead. I understand people want a "look" from the bike bike but if you are going to ride it any you need it to be safe.

5.0 inches into mm is 127
4.5 inches into mm is 114.

Would they make a tire that is unsafe ?

A 130 wide tire is the same as a 510 tire. so the 5=127 sounds about right. To bad they don't make a 127 wide tire. They do make a 5.00 tire.
A lot of people that want to run the same height tire run the same size wheel on both the front and rear. Like those thaty build a tracker style bike. They often run an 18 wheel on both ends.
