Got my first XS for FREE

Ya I guess it's time to research carb soaking. I sprayed em down a bit and at least broke free (gently) everything I could get to. Butterflies free'd up at least. Anyone able to identify the carbs so I know for sure what I'm working with?

Those look to be late 70's xs650 bs38 carbs. They wont work/fit on your bike. Post a pic of the front of them and I can tell better what years they are from. My guess is 78-79 but for sure you would need to remove the slide needle and get the numbers off of it. The xs650.com guys would know more and might buy them for parts or rebuild.

I put a post up on classifieds but what's the recommendation for inexpensive carbs to get the bike up and running to see how much I wanna invest in it? I'll post some more pics of the parts I got tomorrow.

I would stick with the 80-82 sohc carbs. The 77-79 ones have issues with pilot mix screws breaking off in the bodies. I would try to find ones that are clean and just need some freshening up. Prices and conditions will very greatly. I have sold cleaned and re-built set from $125-$185 shipped in the past. I have seen very dirty sets that need a full rebuild go for under $50. But time to clean and replace broken parts can run $100+

With your bike you need to keep in mind that your going to spend money on it. It will need new tires, chain and sprockets, battery, carbs/intake parts, plugs wires, brake work and lots more. I have bought bikes for $200 but still had to put $500+ into them to make them safe and reliable. That's just for parts as I do all the work myself.

Definitely know the expense involved. I have 5 bikes, 2 of which are road worthy and they all started as projects. My trail 90 came to me in boxes. Just wanna get this one running and then go from there so was just more curious of a good carb recommendation to cover that issue. Someone recommended Mikuni vm. ?? I'll do some searching on the 80-82 carbs and hopefully find a decent used pair.

I may have a set that would work for you. I just bought two 1980s sohc 400s. I got some extra parts in a tub. There were a set of carbs in there. Ill let you know when I get it sorted. We should both have running bikes in no time.

Here's the set I had in the bucket. I got the one bike running so I probably won't need them right now. Maybe Chris or Mike could let you know if they will work. I'm still learning.

Here's a pic of what I got in my tote of doom related to carbs. XSChris for sake of knowledge why won't this fit my bike? Diameters? Snow here in MT has kept me from the garage and looking at a mockup of why they wouldn't work.

Air boxes are xs400. H-pipe is xs400. You should also have straps for the air boxes that hold them to the battery box. Not sure of the intake boots, I would get new ones and gaskets anyway. The carbs are for the xs650 and wont fit the xs400.

I have the straps too, one gasket also, the intake boots do fit and I'm just trying to decide on carb purchase, I have a line on 3 sets just trying to determine which are in best condition.

What ever ones you get expect to clean and rebuild them. Also hope everything comes apart ok. That's how most get broken.

Alright, getting ready for that 1st start and I need your brains. Got a brand new battery, fully charged and got carbs. Almost done cleaning them, they were pretty good when I received em. New intake boots and gaskets. Got the h pipe, airboxes and straps all clean. Drained and changed oil, cleaned sump screen and put in new filter. Before I mounted the carbs and since I had the batt I went to check for spark. Nothing. Coils tested: primary, spot on at 4 ohms and secondary at 8.2 without caps and 18.5 with. New plugs (ngk br7es) took the resistor caps off, couldn't get b7es locally. When I first got the batt charged and turned the key on, nothing, no neutral light, or anything. Quickly found all the fuses were gone so put those in, turned key and bam, neutral light, tail light, brake lights work, headlight wiring is torn up and no headlight. Killswitch is fkd up and doesn't switch to run/off properly. I then investigated the wires that were loose in front thinking it was a killswitch problem preventing spark. See pics below, in pic 1 the red wire that's not wrapped with blue was hot. Accidentally arced it and blew fuse. Swapped that. Pic 2 is what's coming off killswitch assembly. If the resistor plug is an issue I did try a plug that came with the bike b7es but it could be bad. Am I right in thinking it's the killswitch wiring? I was able to use the screwdriver trick on the starter solenoid and it turns over strong. It's a bitch to kick but I'm hoping that means killer compression and just needs to run a bit. I'm super close, can't wait to hear feedback.

After all that I just thought of something, I bet the damn thing has a clutch and/or kickstand safety feature. It was on the center stand and I wasn't pulling clutch in. Hmmm, I guess we'll see tomorrow.
