Hi folks,

I recently opened the crankcase of my 1983 XS400 12E (DOHC) due to broken gears. It really was a mess, nevertheless I ordered 'new' transmission parts and now I'm looking forward to put it all together.

What kind of confuses me is that I have four c-shaped circlips (2 smaller and 2 bigger ones, I think they're supposed to hold the gear shafts axially) and I don't know where to assembly them. There's eight possibilities to place them: four bearings on each of the two engine halves.

Does anyone know which way to get it right?

Thx!
MM

P.S.: I provided some pictures of the mentioned circlips.

P.P.S.: Pardon my language pls. I possibly mixed up a few technical terms cause I'm not a native speaker.

Install the clips on the bottom case and the trans shafts should fall in place, the grooves arent cut on the top case. Everything should come together one way only. The grooves on the outside of the bearings will match up with the grooves in the bearing-lands on the case. Some bearings have circlips for retainers.

Actually they're cut out on the top case. That's what confused me. However, I'm going to install them in the lower half and see if it fits. Thanks anyways!
Cheers

Im looking at a XS360 case so it couldve changed in later 400 cases. Theres grooves on the top case for the bearings that have C-clips, but no cutout for half-clips.
