Gas tank questions

I have an '82 Seca xs400RJ, but I need a new gas tank. I can't find an original, so I'm looking for a good alternative. Would an '81 xs400 tank fit well? I'm looking for the closest I can get without having to modify too much. I tried a maxim 400 tank but there is a big space between the seat and the tank and I'm not sure how to remedy that.

A1981 XS400 tank won't bolt up to a 1982 XS400 Seca. A 1981 XS400SH and 1982 XS400R are two very different models. Shame on Yamaha for not dropping the XS moniker when the Maxim/Seca series began in 1982. They were all new models then, and could have easily survived with their Maxim/Seca names alone.

Hey mate, I also have a Seca xs400r and we (mate and I who are building the bike up) have found a tank off a Virago that should fit (seems to have the same sort of male and female bits) but we are yet to give it a try.

Will yell asap when we try.
